    This based on £6.50 per hour for 40 hours per week. In the 2nd year, it will go up to £9 or £10.42 depending your age and minimum wage requirements. On completion and if successful in gaining a post, you could be earning £31,250 a year.

What will the apprentice be doing?

Candidates will be required to undertake a 3-week long pre-apprenticeship programme, as part of the recruitment process.  In this programme, candidates will gain essential skills and qualifications to prepare for the specialist work environment, including Level 1 Health and Safety, CSCS card, EUSR card – for Gas, Power, and Water, and first aid training.

Candidates will have the opportunity to learn practical skills through undertaking ‘Introduction to Reinstatement’ activities at the training provider’s purpose designed site in West Bromwich.  The training provider will issue you with all the necessary PPE to engage safely with hands-on learning and you will also be assessed on vital employability skills, such as communication, attendance, punctuality, and teamwork. 

For the successful candidates this will be a very practical and physical role working in all weathers and temperatures.  Duties to include:

  • Learning to read drawings of where services/pipework are located.
  • Excavating / Digging up roads to get to the Gas, Electric and water services pipework.
  • Assisting with the laying of new service pipework and repair/replacement of old/damaged pipework.
  • Lifting and carrying materials, tools...
  • Following strict Health and Safety procedures at all times.
  • Completing various training courses and qualifications as well as the apprenticeship course work.
  • Learning how to use various hand tools correctly as well as power tools, equipment and machinery.
  • You would be in a gang with very experienced and qualified colleagues who you would shadow and support, gradually get more and more involved.
  • Attend College on block release to learn and carry out the knowledge/theory and practical training involved in the qualification.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

The successful candidate will receive training in the workplace from experienced colleagues and supervisors in all aspects of the role.

Whilst in the workplace, you will also receive assessor visits and they will coach you and feedback to you and give further training and support. 

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake and achieve a Level 2 Highway Maintenance Skilled Operative apprenticeship standard.

The training will take place in week blocks throughout the apprenticeship at the Sandwell College training centre on Phoenix Street in West Bromwich.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

There are no guarantees of a job at the end of the apprenticeship but, if you work hard and have excellent time keeping and attendance, it will greatly increase your chances of being offered a continued role.
