What will the apprentice be doing?

The lucky candidate will get to help the farm with the following duties:

Livestock to include:

  •        Cleaning out the sheds
  •         Bedding up
  •         Feeding
  •         Checking on livestock

 

Tractor work to include:

  •        Cutting silage
  •         Muck spreading

 

You will be on the farm rota so expect some weekend working.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

You will be working towards a Level 2 General Farm Worker Apprenticeship Standard.

You will receive on and off the job training and support from an assessor and an apprenticeship advisor.

You will be required to attend Bicton College 3 days a week every fortnight (until Easter) as part of the apprenticeship training.

Mandatory qualifications included in this apprenticeship are:

  • Award in Emergency First Aid at Work, which is a minimum of 1-day course (Ofqual regulated)
  • City & Guilds Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides Guidance or Lantra Safe use of Pesticides’

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, there may be the opportunity for a permanent position.

Things to consider

The farm is set in a beautiful but rural location with limited public transport links, so the candidate will need to make sure they have their own transport to get to work.

About the employer

The farm is looking for the right person to help on their sheep and beef farm. They have approximately 400 acres, they lamb around 450 and calve around 150. This is a suckler beef herd. They also do their own silage and hay cutting and wrapping.
