What will the apprentice be doing?
An opportunity to start your career in healthcare in a friendly GP practice by the seaside. You will train to be a Healthcare Assistant which is the firsts step in a nursing career.
Working as part of our clinical team in a GP practice you will initially train to:
- Take blood samples from patients (phlebotomy)
- Test urine samples
- Take basic health measurement of patients (height, weight and blood pressure).
You will be supported by an HCA (formerly an apprentice), Practice Nurse, Phelbotomist, Health and Wellbeing Coach, 3 Senior Nurse Practitioners, 3 Physician Associates and the GPs as well as the rest of our friendly practice team.
As your skills progress their may be opportunities to learning about wound care, injections and breathing tests (spirometry). You will treat patients one to one in structure appointments when you will be expected to accurately record the information on the patient record.
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
Level 2 Healthcare Assistant:
Over the course of 15 – 18 months (dependent upon the level of course an apprentice is being enrolled onto), you will study things such as the principles of healthcare and safeguarding, person-centred care & support, physiological measurements, basic life support, dementia, cognitive & mental health support, moving, handling and infection control, supporting daily living, lifespan development and healthcare needs, duty of care and legislation. Higher level courses go into more depth within different pathways such as dementia, learning disabilities and Austism, children & adolescent mental health, combined therapies, complex care, maternity, mental health, rehabilitation, substance misuse and acquired brain injury (these topics may differ).
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship programme, you will achieve a Level 2 or 3 qualification and a TQUK Diploma in Care.

To make you aware, this position is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore all convictions, cautions and bind-overs, including those regarded as ‘spent’ must be declared, and you will be asked about these during the recruitment process.
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
On successful completion of the apprenticeship, future prospect is a permanent role as a healthcare assistant which can be the first step in a nursing role.
