Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
Ram Power is a specialist engineering company based in Dunstable, designing and manufacturing bespoke hydraulic cylinders, actuators and dampers for demanding industries where precision, performance and reliability matter. As an Engineering Fitter Apprentice, you will work alongside experienced engineers and technicians, gaining hands-on experience across the complete manufacturing process. Unlike many larger manufacturers, you'll see products progress from design through manufacture, assembly, testing and final inspection, giving you a broad understanding of engineering and manufacturing. We are not a mass-production factory. We work on complex, low-volume engineering projects, including defence, where our team has to think, solve problems and understand exactly how and why a product is being made. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys practical work, solving problems and learning how things are made.
Your duties will include:
- Mechanical fitting and assembly of hydraulic cylinders and components
- Learning how hydraulic systems and specialist equipment operate
- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings
- Using hand tools, measuring equipment and workshop machinery safely
- Measuring and inspecting manufactured components
- Assisting with hydraulic assembly, testing and quality checks
- Learning about seals, bearings, engineering materials and components
- Following safe working practices and workshop procedures
- Supporting fault-finding and problem-solving activities
- Completing quality documentation and manufacturing records • Gaining exposure to machining processes including turning and milling
- Working as part of a skilled engineering team to deliver high-quality products
You won't be expected to know everything from day one. We are looking for someone with enthusiasm, curiosity and a genuine interest in engineering.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone with a genuine interest in engineering and manufacturing who is keen to develop a long-term career in the industry. The ideal candidate will have good communication and team-working skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to think logically when solving problems. You should be organised, willing to use your initiative, and confident using basic IT systems. You'll enjoy practical, hands-on work and be curious about how things are designed, made and improved. We're looking for someone who is reliable, motivated to learn, and willing to take responsibility as their skills develop. The ability to follow instructions carefully, work safely, and maintain a high standard of work is essential. Above all, we're seeking an enthusiastic individual with a positive attitude who wants to learn, contribute to the team and build a successful future in engineering. We are investing in new technology, new capability and new people. We are looking for apprentices who want to be part of that journey, bring ideas, develop real engineering skills and become an important part of the future of Ram Power. Please outline your travel arrangements in your application and confirm you can attend work and training reliably.
