What you'll do at work

Media Relations & PR:

  • Support media relations activity and maintain media contact databases
  • Assist with press releases, media statements, and responses to enquiries
  • Identify opportunities to promote positive stories and organisational achievements
  • Monitor and evaluate media coverage and PR activity

Media Monitoring & Insight:

  • Monitor news, sector developments, and emerging issues
  • Produce media summaries and reports for colleagues and senior leaders
  • Track competitor, partner, and industry activity to identify opportunities and risks
  • Share relevant news and communications opportunities with the team

Content Creation:

  • Create content for internal and external audiences, including news stories, blogs, newsletters, website content, and case studies
  • Support the production of presentations, reports, promotional materials, graphics, photography, and short-form videos
  • Gather stories and content from colleagues and stakeholders across the organisation

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Maintain stakeholder databases and contact information
  • Support engagement with communities, partners, local organisations, industry bodies, and elected representatives
  • Attend meetings and events to build relationships, gather feedback, and support engagement activities
  • Assist with stakeholder communications, reporting, and evaluation of engagement outcomes

Social Media & Digital Communications:

  • Support website updates and content management
  • Plan, schedule, publish, and monitor content across digital and social media channels
  • Respond to enquiries where appropriate and identify new opportunities to engage audiences

Campaigns & Events:

  • Support the planning, delivery, and evaluation of communications campaigns
  • Assist with events, launches, stakeholder meetings, and community engagement activities
  • Gather feedback, measure effectiveness, and contribute creative ideas

Administration & Team Support:

  • Maintain communications plans, project trackers, stakeholder databases, and content calendars
  • Organise communication assets, files, and contact lists
    Attend team meetings, contribute ideas, and undertake other duties appropriate to the apprenticeship role

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Use IT systems and software to support campaigns.
  • Build stakeholder relationships and present to them in both formal and informal settings.
  • Support campaigns by undertaking tasks such as desk research, event co-ordination, and database management to ensure compliance with agreed service or performance levels.
  • Produce written content such as news releases, articles, social media content, bulletins, and blogs, that is accessible to meet the needs of different audiences and channels.
  • Able to adapt communication styles as appropriate to the audience.
  • Support the production of non-written content such as film production management, producing short user generated style content, live video streaming, social image creation, and infographic production.
  • Distribute content using social media channels.
  • Use qualitative and quantitative research to analyse and evaluate public relations and communications activities and present findings to project stakeholders.
  • Analyse and interpret complex subjects through different communication channels and identify areas for improvement.
  • Input to and review communications programmes and plans with a focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles within their organisation's procedures.
  • Undertake risk assessment and provide information to support stakeholder planning and strategy.
  • Plan and deliver engagement activities for stakeholders, such as curating the content, supporting events, and collating feedback.
  • Proofread and edit communications materials such as news releases, graphics and video, and social media content.
  • Support team and colleague development through buddying or coaching.
  • Contribute to activities which focus on improving sustainability within their organisation's procedures.

Training schedule

Level 4 Public Relations and Communications Apprenticeship.

This apprenticeship develops the knowledge and skills needed to build, protect and enhance the reputation of organisations, brands and individuals. Apprentices learn how to create and distribute content, manage stakeholder relationships, support communication campaigns, engage with media, and use digital and social media channels effectively. The programme combines practical workplace experience with professional learning, covering research, campaign planning, content creation, crisis communications, evaluation and reporting.

Study/work split:

You will spend one day per week attending workshops or completing work based assignments. The other four days will be in the workplace.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

English (grade 4 (C) and above)

A Level in:

Any subjects (grade level 3)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

  • Not currently enrolled on any other courses
  • Aged 18 or over (for insurance purposes)
  • Currently living in Luton (LU1-LU4)
