Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

The apprentice will work alongside an experienced bricklayer on a range of domestic construction projects, developing practical skills and knowledge in bricklaying and general building.

Day-to-day responsibilities will include assisting with setting out work, preparing foundations and working areas, mixing mortar, loading and moving materials, preparing bricks and blocks, and maintaining a clean and organised work area.

As their skills develop, they will learn and carry out brickwork and blockwork, including building walls, corners, openings and other masonry work to the required specification. They will learn to read and understand drawings, take measurements, use levels and other hand and power tools, and work accurately to line, level and gauge.

The apprentice will also learn about damp-proof courses, insulation, cavity wall construction, wall ties, lintels and other aspects of modern masonry construction. They will assist with demolition, alterations, drainage and other general building tasks where appropriate.

They will be expected to follow health and safety procedures at all times, wear appropriate PPE, look after tools and equipment, keep the workplace tidy, and work responsibly alongside other trades.

The apprentice will gradually take on more responsibility as their confidence and competence improve, with tasks carried out under appropriate supervision and in line with their apprenticeship training and college requirements.
