Summary

To carry out vehicle servicing and repairs to the highest possible level of quality and customer service under the supervision and training of a designated vehicle technician.

Wage

£16,640 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • To meet the manufacturers’ servicing and repair times
  • To report current and possible future vehicle faults and service requirements you notice while working on vehicles
  • To accurately record and report all hours, components, materials and consumables used when working on a particular vehicle
  • To protect customers’ vehicles with covers and dust sheets and to take care not to damage the vehicle or components during service, repair or testing
  • To safeguard the customer’s vehicle and contents whilst being serviced, repaired or tested
  • To ensure that all vehicles are thoroughly examined and report on general vehicle condition with particular emphasis on customer safety
  • To ensure that all work carried out is to MOT and/or manufacturers’ safety standards
  • To ensure maximum use of technical knowledge and skills to achieve effective, economic and safe service/repair of customers’ vehicles
  • To undertake regular quality checks of work completed and to ensure that vehicles comply with safety standards when returned to the customer, or that any faults have been reported and noted on the job card
  • To minimise wastage of all materials, oils and fluids and to safely dispose of any waste. And to keep the work area clean and tidy.
    To take care of all plant, tools and equipment used and to operate any plant or equipment having full regard to your own and others’ safety
  • To recover/collect damaged or defective vehicles as and when necessary
  • To ensure that all customer complaints are dealt with both speedily and effectively, referring any unresolved problems to your manager
  • To ensure that all company, franchiser and trade association policies, procedures and minimum standards are implemented and maintained and that all statutory requirements including trading standards, fire, health and safety are adhered to

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
  • Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
  • Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
  • Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
  • Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
  • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
  • Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
  • Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

Training schedule

  • Typically 4 days on-the-job training within our workshop
  • 1 day at college
