Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Under appropriate guidance, you will learn to:

  • Plan, prepare and help deliver individual and group activities
  • Develop creative and stimulating opportunities based on residents' interests
  • Support arts, crafts, music, reminiscence, sensory activities, gardening, games, gentle movement and other wellbeing opportunities
  • Help residents maintain existing interests and try new experiences
  • Support spontaneous activities and everyday meaningful moments, rather than relying solely on a timetable of organised events
  • Adapt activities so that people with different physical, sensory and cognitive abilities can participate
  • Help create enjoyable seasonal events, celebrations and special occasions
  • Assist with trips and activities within the local community
  • Help arrange visiting entertainers, community groups and other external activities

Alongside the apprenticeship, the apprentice may also access relevant care, dementia and wellbeing training so that their project work remains grounded in safe, respectful and person-led practice.

Skills for Care highlights the importance of activities workers understanding individual needs, organising meaningful activities and developing relevant skills once in post. This supports the wellbeing focus of the role, while the apprenticeship route will provide the broader project management framework for planning, delivering and evaluating improvement work.

The apprenticeship will also help the apprentice develop project-management skills such as project planning, communication, stakeholder engagement, organisation, time management, risk awareness, problem solving, monitoring progress, reflecting on outcomes and contributing to continuous improvement.

As part of the role, the apprentice will also undertake relevant Chapel House Care training, including areas such as:

  • Safeguarding adults
  • Dementia awareness
  • Health and Safety
  • First aid where appropriate
  • Infection prevention and control
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Communication
  • Mental capacity and consent
  • Person-centred practice
