Summary

The apprenticeship role will focus on developing effective skills and knowledge to enable the individual to successfully work with children in a classroom environment, as well as linking in with SEND needs within a 1:1 and small group context. We are passionate professionals and keen to support future practitioners on their career journey.

£12,480 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Your day-to-day focus will include helping children to access learning, build their confidence and develop socially and emotionally within a nurturing mainstream environment.

Key tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the class teacher with daily tasks during lesson time
  • Providing tailored 1:1 support for children with SEND
  • Supporting small group interventions and targeted learning opportunities
  • Assisting children with communication, regulation and engagement
  • Supporting play-based learning and classroom routines
  • Helping to create a safe, inclusive learning environment
  • Contributing to and monitoring progress through routine assessments and support plans under guidance

  • Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

One day study at Newcastle College (ST5 2GB)

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade (Grade 5/B or above))
  • Maths (grade Grade 5/B or above)
