£15,600 to £24,784.50, depending on your age

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

We are currently offering a hands-on Enclosing Lines and Post-Print Finishing apprenticeship.

You will learn all aspects of the printing industry and discover how raw printed material is transformed into finished products through various complex finishing processes. You will gain valuable experience of delivering top-quality printed items to tight deadlines with precision in a well-respected company.

This role covers a raft of value adding supplementary print finishing lines. You will learn to operate a range of technologies throughout the business including mailing, digital inkjet, multi-product inserter and multi-functional bagging line.

  • Set up and check the multi-unit print press, including speeds, inks and toners and pre-printing quality checks.
  • Follow print press start up or warm up procedures.
  • Apply print press operations and techniques, including managing colour. Handle variable data on digital presses.
  • Follow quality control processes during printing, including checking for colour matching, print resolution, product consistency.
  • Apply press equipment and machinery maintenance techniques including cleaning and servicing.
  • Follow machine shut down, safe isolation, hand over procedures. Escalate issues.
  • Apply press quality assurance procedures.
  • Apply safe systems of work to the printing press process in compliance with regulations, standards, and guidelines. This should include identifying risks and hazards and the handling and disposal of chemicals.
  • Set up finishing equipment for example, guillotines, stitching-trimming machinery, binding machinery, laminating equipment, die-cutters.
  • Operate finishing equipment to apply different finishing processes, for example, varnishing, folding, embossing and debossing, foil blocking, scoring, packing, gluing, match and attach, tab and slot, sorting, banding.
  • Prepare printing for next stage, including packing and wrapping.
  • Apply post-press equipment maintenance techniques including cleaning and servicing.
  • Apply post-press quality assurance procedures such as checking for folding accuracy, stitch alignment, foil position.
  • Apply safe systems of work to the finishing process in compliance with regulations, standards and guidelines, including the handling and disposal of chemicals.

Training schedule

Training will be delivered over 3 years, both on and off the job. You will be assigned a course tutor who you will meet with regularly either in person or via video call.

The apprenticeship will cover 3 areas:

  • Core Knowledge
  • Skills and behaviours
  • Specialist Focus – Post-Press

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

Five subjects including English and Maths (grade 4 or above)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

The Apprentice will be part of a small team of other Mailing Line and Print Finishing staff. The role will include manual handling – paper, cartons, pallets etc., and much of the day can be spent standing whilst operating items of equipment.

Normal colour vision is essential.

The Apprentice should have the ability to operate independently, as well as being seen as a team member within the Company, supporting colleagues as appropriate.

Must be engaged, self-motivated, keen to learn and apply new skills where appropriate.

Must have a flexible approach and will be part of a team where the job role may change from time to time.

Should be able to document training provided and maintain an ongoing learning log.
