This is an exciting opportunity to develop your mechanical skills to work on the specialised equipment on emergency service vehicles.

EMAS are looking for an enthusiastic Apprentice Fleet Vehicle Technician to join their busy workshop, starting in October / November 2026.

Wage

£27,261 a year

£13.98 for first year – this is a percentage of NHS B5, % will increase each year as long as hitting required performance and progression.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Comply with health and safety procedures in the workplace in compliance with regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Prepare the vehicle and working area before the work activity. For example, remove or mitigate slip and trip hazards.
  • Maintain and restore the work area during and on completion of the activity.
  • Store, maintain, including calibration checks, and return tools and equipment to storage.
  • Access vehicle technical data to inform inspections and make judgements on wear and serviceability.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability procedures, regulations, standards, and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling, and disposal.
  • Apply vehicle safety inspection and routine maintenance procedures using vehicle specific data on car, car derived van or light goods vehicle.
  • Select and use tools and equipment, mechanical and electrical measuring tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Remove, repair and replace vehicle tyre and balance wheel assemblies on car, car derived van or light goods vehicle. For example, ultra-low profile, directional, asymmetric, run-flat tyres.
  • Inspect, remove, and replace of parts or components in cars, car derived vans, or light goods vehicles for the following: steering systems and suspension systems, braking systems, emission systems, air conditioning systems, battery and charging systems, fluid and filtration systems.
  • Apply state-of-health condition monitoring tests to high voltage batteries and chargers for electrified cars, car derived vans, or light goods vehicles.
  • Apply four-wheel geometry checks and adjustments to cars, car derived vans, and light goods vehicles.
  • Apply safe working practices and procedures to isolate electrified vehicles for maintenance.
  • Record vehicle service maintenance, parts replacement, or repair.
  • Apply customer service principles and organisational customer care practices. For example, identifying customer and vehicle needs, resolve low level customer complaints, make recommendations to customers based on results of inspection, maintenance, or repair of vehicles, customer payment transactions and organisational sales processes.
  • Provide quotation of cost and order automotive parts, products, and consumables applicable to the vehicle.
  • Apply procedures for stock and parts storage: ordering, checking and stock rotation.
  • Apply organisational sales processes. For example, show and tell, features and benefits, consultative selling, mini closing and closing.
  • Apply team working principles.
  • Comply with equity, diversity, and inclusion guidance.

Training schedule

Candidates will work towards achieving the Autocare Technician Apprenticeship Standard at level 2. They will also be required to study towards achieving level 2 maths and English functional skills if they do not already hold equivalent qualifications. Autocare technician / Skills England

The programme lasts for 24 months. The training incorporates underpinning knowledge in partnership and managed by EMTEC Colleges. Throughout the duration of the programme the candidates will be expected to travel to EMTEC’s training centre in Nottingham for 16 separate weeks to carry out skills training.

Regular visits to the dealership from EMTEC Vocational Learning Advisors will take place, who will observe all evidence opportunities that occur naturally in the workplace.

Assessment Includes: On-going assessment of soft skills and behaviours, a behaviour assessment, Knowledge and understanding tests at the end of Gateway 1 and 2, Skills tests at the end of Gateway 1 and 2.

This is followed by the synoptic assessment, of which there are four components: Log book (final year review to assess apprentice’s progress), Behaviour Assessment, Knowledge Test (an in-depth, online test exploring knowledge/ understanding of the apprentice) and Skills Test (two-day practical examination of the skills of the apprentice).

Each apprentice will achieve the following:

  • Autocare Technician Level 2 (ST0499)
  • Level 3 Award in Automotive Refrigerant Handling (EC842-2006) QCF 
  • Level 3 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement QCF

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

Maths and English (grade 3)

On completion of the apprenticeship the average salary of a Autocare technician anywhere between 24k-27k. While most experienced technicians may earn up to £33k per year. (Current offer to our qualified vehicle technicians with C1 category driving licence is Full NHS B5 plus recruitment and retention payment plus unsocial hours payments approx. £40k.)
