Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
Phase 1: Learning the Fundamentals of Site Operations
You'll develop a strong understanding of how a modern concrete plant operates, including:
- Understanding site layout, storage areas, drainage systems, traffic management, and safe working practices
- Operating a wheeled loading shovel to transport and load materials into the plant
- Carrying out routine housekeeping duties to keep the site safe, clean, and organised
- Assisting with plant maintenance and inspections
- Supporting the safe and efficient running of the site in line with Health & Safety and environmental legislation
Phase 2: Developing Concrete Production Expertise
As your confidence grows, you'll learn how high-quality concrete is produced by:
- Operating computerised batching systems
- Producing concrete to industry quality standards and QSRMC requirements
- Supporting compliance with ISO 9001 quality management standards
- Assisting with plant servicing and preventative maintenance activities
- Completing operational, environmental, and health and safety documentation

- Conduct pre-start checks of plant equipment.
- Conduct post operation checks of plant equipment.
- Identify and report environmental issues of work undertaken.
- Conduct maintenance activities such as planned, preventative, predictive or reactive.
- Use materials, fluids or lubricants required for operation and maintenance.
- Monitor stock levels.
- Monitor end product quality and report issues.
- Carry out and record learning and development activities.
- Comply with health and safety procedures in compliance with regulations and standards. Comply with safe systems of work.
- Follow procedures in line with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance.
- Lock off and isolate equipment or systems using Lockout, Tag out, Try out (LOTOTO) procedures.
- Follow equality, diversity and inclusion procedures.
- Identify, organise and use resources to complete tasks, with consideration for cost, quality, safety, security and environmental impact.
- Communicate with others verbally for example colleagues and stakeholders.
- Record or enter information - paper based or electronic. For example, energy usage, risk assessments, equipment service records, handover documents and manufacturers' documentation, checklists, pre-start and post operation check records, waste records.
- Identify and take action when observing unsafe practice.
- Carry out risk assessments.

Training schedule
You will train:
Tarmac Way, off, Wood Ln, Nether Langwith, Mansfield NG20 9JF.
You will train via e-learning and attend training days withing the 13 months.
Requirements
Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- english (grade C or above)
- mathematics (grade C or above)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
