Summary

Foundation apprenticeships are introductory courses that help young people get started in an industry. You do not need to have any specific qualifications or experience to apply.

Anyone between 16 and 21 can start a foundation apprenticeship.

If you're between 22 and 24, you can start if you:

  • have an EHC plan
  • are in care or have been in care
  • are in prison or have been in prison

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is interested in engineering and manufacturing. You will gain practical experience in a working engineering environment. You will learn from experienced members of our team and develop the technical skills needed to become a competent and confident machining technician.

Wage

£16,640 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Setting and operating CNC and/or conventional machining equipment.
  • Understanding engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Learning how to select and use appropriate cutting tools and machining methods.
  • Using precision measuring equipment, including verniers, micrometers and gauges.
  • Understanding dimensional tolerances and quality requirements.
  • Producing components accurately and efficiently.
  • Carrying out basic machine maintenance and housekeeping.
  • Understanding manufacturing processes and production requirements.
  • Working safely within a busy engineering environment.
  • Identifying quality issues and learning how to resolve manufacturing problems.
  • Developing an understanding of materials, tooling and machining techniques
