£20,000 a year

£20,000 per year, paid monthly on the 25th of each month, should the 25th fall on a weekend or bank holiday, payment will be made the preceding Friday.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

The duties below are grouped under four headings that reflect the main areas of the payroll team. This list is not exhaustive and may be adjusted as the role and the wider function develop.

Purchase and sales ledger

  • Enter invoices and payments accurately onto the accounting software
  • Process purchase invoices and check them against orders and delivery notes
  • Process sales invoices and send them to customers on time
  • Help to answer supplier and customer queries about invoices and payments

Banking and credit control

  • Help with bank reconciliations, checking that transactions match bank statements
  • Support the credit control process, including chasing overdue payments under guidance
  • Keep accurate, up to date financial records and filing systems

Reporting and month end

  • Prepare and update spreadsheets in Excel to support reporting
  • Support the team with month end and year end preparation, including audit requests
  • Carry out ad hoc analysis and reporting as asked by the finance team
  • Handle general finance administration, including scanning, filing and data checks

Learning and development

  • Attend all AAT training days and complete coursework and assessments on time
  • Apply learning from the course to day to day work in the finance team
  • Meet regularly with the line manager and training provider to review progress

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Assist with the investigation of, and response to, financial information queries.
  • Record and analyse financial data using the organisation’s standard tools and processes.
  • Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements, and report financial information to users of accounts.
  • Assist with production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
  • Reconcile financial data, such as preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
  • Investigate, resolve, or escalate transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
  • Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
  • Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
  • Communicate using a range of approaches and media, with an understanding of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.

Training schedule

The Level 3 Assistant Accountant apprenticeship standard includes 6 AAT exams.

The knowledge units will be delivered online through day release.

AAT Modules are as follows:

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

5 GCSE's including Maths and English (grade 5/B or above)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

Mainly working from home but regular face-to-face meetings with line management will be required. Occasional travel may also be required.
