Summary

We are a fast paced busy Civil Engineering Company with a fleet of 500 vehicles.

Recruiting for a Level 3 HGV Mechanic working on a range of vehicles from fleet vans, Grab (HGV) lorries, Hotboxes and Vacuum Excavators. You will also be working on plant items such as dumpers and diggers, trailers.

Wage

£16,640 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

On this 3 year course, you will be assigned initially to a trained mechanic completing lighter mechanical duties, assisting the trained mechanic and then progress once competent to complete service/MOT activities and then progress to technical repairs for defects or breakdowns, fault diagnosis over a range of small vehicles to HGV vehicles.

  • General Housekeeping of workshop and bay areas
  • Storage of tools and equipment
  • Completion of job cards
  • Movement of vehicles within plant workshop compound
  • Vehicle washing 
  • Servicing of fluids
  • Tyre checks/Vehicle walk around checks
  • Electrical repairs
  • Engine repairs
  • Brakes/clutches
  • All compliance and regulatory duties for MOT preparations
  • Any duties that are within your skills and capabilities

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
  • The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
  • Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
  • The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
  • Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
  • Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
  • Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
  • Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
  • Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
  • To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.

Training schedule

  • Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Level 3
  • Worskhop Supervisor will mentor and be responsible for the apprentice development
  • Assigned to a qualified and trained mechanic to work with daily and supervised
  • Block release to college - 1 week at a time
