Summary

Foundation apprenticeships are introductory courses that help young people get started in an industry. You do not need to have any specific qualifications or experience to apply.

Anyone between 16 and 21 can start a foundation apprenticeship.

If you're between 22 and 24, you can start if you:

  • have an EHC plan
  • are in care or have been in care
  • are in prison or have been in prison

Level 2 Health and Social Care is an entry‑level, UK‑recognised vocational qualification (equivalent to GCSE level) that teaches the basic skills needed to work as a care assistant, support worker, or healthcare assistant.

£14,976 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Support clients to engage and participate in activities. Work as part of a team to lead sessions, provide support to clients as needed, sometimes on a one-to-one basis. Work flexibly across the service, ensuring client needs are met.

Main tasks:

  • Provide on-going support to clients throughout the day, during all activities and in break times
  • Support clients to participate in activities, helping them to achieve their goals
  • Provide “active support” in line with clients’ individual plans and risk assessments
  • Assist with activity planning and risk assessments
  • Lead activities as needed, both on site and in the community
  • Assist with record keeping such as daily reports, case diary sheets and contribute to client reviews as needed
  • Promote health and wellbeing of all clients
  • Ensure the health, safety and welfare of clients and staff is always given priority
  • Work with other team members to ensure smooth running of the daily programme
  • Work in line with Day Opportunities principles, company policies and procedures, with specific regard to the safeguarding of vulnerable adults

The above list is not exhaustive, and you will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by your role and the overall objectives of the organisation.

Training schedule

  • The apprentice will attend Waltham Forest College, located at 707 Forest Road, Walthamstow, London, E17 4JB, as part of their apprenticeship training
  • 1 day per week at college
  • On-site college-based training
  • The remaining days will be spent working at London Ability, gaining practical experience and developing social care skills in the workplace
  • Training will support the apprentice in building the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to successfully complete their apprenticeship

You do not need to have any specific qualifications or experience to apply for a foundation apprenticeship.
