Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

The role will be at the patient's bedside- taking on tasks including:

  • Washing and dressing patients
  • Helping patients move
  • Making beds
  • Serving meals

We will also teach you technical skills, including:

  • How to check a patient's blood pressure, temperature and heartrate
  • Emergency lifesaving skills
  • More advanced skills, depending on the type of ward, such as taking a patient's blood for testing

Training schedule

Your training will mostly take place at the hospital you are based at. You will be assigned a personal tutor who will support you throughout your apprenticeship which will include:

  • One-to-one coaching
  • Small group tutorials

  • Work-based training

All apprentices will complete core units and then you can choose optional units depending on your role:

  • Adult nursing support
  • Theatre support
  • Allied health professional therapy support

You will also gain a Level 3 diploma in healthcare.

On completion of this apprenticeship you will be eligible to apply for other more advanced apprenticeships, including the nursing associate or nursing degree apprenticeship.

Functional Skills in:

Other requirements

This role is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

You must be a minimum of 18 years old to apply for the role and be willing to work a minimum of 23 hours per week. You must be able to commit to the standard shift pattern for this role which includes long days, nights, weekend and bank holidays.

We will be holding an in-person Healthcare Support Worker Interview Day on Friday 11th September  at Winchester Hospital.
