Summary

As an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor, you will support the commercial team in managing the financial and contractual aspects of construction projects. The role is part of their Local Authority sector and will be working on the Suffolk County Council street lighting maintenance contract based on their Melton depot

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Assist in the preparation of cost estimates, budgets, and tender documents
  • Support the measurement and valuation of works, including site visits and take-offs
  • Help manage subcontractor procurement, including issuing enquiries and analysing quotations
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of applications for payment and final accounts
  • Support the administration of contracts, including NEC and bespoke forms
  • Help monitor project costs and progress against budgets
  • Assist in identifying and valuing variations and Compensation Events
  • Contribute to the preparation of cost reports and forecasts
  • Work closely with project managers, site teams, and subcontractors
  • Attend site meetings and contribute to commercial discussions
  • Liaise with suppliers and clients under supervision
  • Attend college/university as required and complete coursework on time
  • Participate in internal training and mentoring programmes
  • Maintain a development log and seek feedback to improve performance

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Health and Safety: Apply health and safety issues to all activities.
  • Sustainability: Demonstrate application of the principles of sustainability.
  • Construction Technology: Assist in the implementation of the most appropriate solutions for construction projects
  • Contracts: Be able to apply different types of contracts to different situations.
  • Procurement: Assist in the selection of and negotiation with specialist contractors for a construction project.
  • Cost control: Assist in the measurement and costing of construction works during a project.
  • Financial reporting: Assist in the preparation of financial reports, cash flow and cost forecasts for a construction project.
  • Administration: Assist in the collection, collation and storage of relevant data and its analysis.
