Summary

We are looking for a motivated apprentice to join our engineering team in a hands-on, multi-skilled role combining maintenance engineering and toolroom practices.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Main Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Maintenance and Toolroom operations
  • Assisting with planned preventative maintenance (PPM)
  • Support breakdown response and fault finding
  • Work on motors, gearboxes, conveyors, and pneumatic systems
  • Help improve equipment reliability and reduce downtime
  • Toolroom & Machining
  • Manufacture and repair components using:

    o   Manual milling machines

    o   Centre lathes

    o   Surface grinders

  • Produce precision parts (shafts, bushes, spacers, brackets).
  • Support the development of jigs, fixtures, and tooling
  • Carry out bench fitting and assembly work
  • Help deliver rapid in-house repairs to support production
  • Assist with basic electrical fault finding
  • Work with sensors, relays, and control systems (under supervision)
  • Engineering Fundamentals:

    o   Read engineering drawings and follow job instructions

    o   Use precision measuring equipment

    o   Learn tolerances, fits, and material properties

  • Identify equipment to work on. Check plant configuration is as defined.
  • Prepare the work area for maintenance tasks.
  • Identify environmental and health and safety hazards and risks and apply control measures.
  • Apply health, safety, and environmental procedures in compliance with regulations, standards, and guidance. For example, signage and barriers, working at height, confined spaces, and COSHH.
  • Follow security procedures. For example, site access, document classification, and securing assets.
  • Follow emergency incident and response procedures.
  • Apply sustainability principles. For example, minimising waste.
  • Segregate items for reuse, recycling, and waste.
  • Use mathematical principles and formulae to support engineering maintenance.

  • Day release to West Suffolk College

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 5)
  • Maths (grade 5)
