Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
To assist in maintaining an up-to-date asset register of all medical devices and selected laboratory equipment deemed the responsibility of the section.
To assist Medical Technical Officers and Senior Medical Technical Officers in providing prompt attention to faults on all medical and laboratory equipment, including:
- Ventilatory support
- High acuity patient monitoring
- ECG
- Defibrillation and resuscitation
- Foetal monitoring
- Infant incubators
- Vital signs monitoring
- Thermometry
- Invasive and non-invasive blood pressure
This list is not exhaustive and will develop in line with the needs of the Trust.
Commission new equipment and carry out acceptance tests in accordance with IEC 62353 and Managing Medical Devices January 2021.
Under supervision, carry out planned preventative maintenance, necessary for safe operational efficiency to medical devices and laboratory equipment, which use electrical, electronic, electro-mechanical and/or medical gases for its operation.
Keep up to date records of performance, malfunction, and failure of medical devices and to identify the need to replace, repair or dispose of equipment.
Under supervision, be able to analyse/diagnose faults and effect repairs where required on selected medical devices and to calibrate/configure in accordance with the manufacturer’s procedures.
Maintain safety standards in accordance with the Health & Safety/Electricity at Work Acts.
Demonstrate the ability to work safely with the following hazards:
- Electricity supply/electric current
- High voltage/radio frequency radiation
- Compressed medical gases
- Anaesthetic agents
- Biohazards
- COSHH
Have knowledge and understanding of information technology in support of their core responsibilities.
Carry out duties not specific to the core skills as deemed necessary by the EBME Manager.
Disseminating as required, information concerning the operation and performance of equipment and the general work of the section to the EBME Manager and other staff.
Advise the EBME Manager on the need for additional materials and spares.
Advise and inform senior officers of all matters relevant, when carrying out EBME duties and to furnish technical reports as required.
Keep acquainted with general technological development on matters which may affect, or be beneficial, to effective maintenance of medical devices.
Be prepared to learn new techniques and attend technical training as deemed necessary by the EBME Manager.

Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
