Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
The purpose of the role is to carry out the installation and maintenance of Fire Alarm Systems, Intruder Alarms, CCTV, Access Control and Intercom Systems.
Key responsibilities of the role:
- Ability to understand and learn engineering principles
- Develop skills to service, install and repair the key systems of our industry
- Managing and maintaining your own van stock once a van has been assigned to you
- Placing orders for equipment, first ensuring that the equipment is not already available in the EFT Stores
- Booking appointments directly with customers where required
- Coordination and liaison with customers, providing continued updates on queries and outstanding works, ensuring we are delivering high-level customer service to our clients
- Attending training, both internal and external, and carrying out additional studies in your own time, as the learning curriculum requires
- Carry out both written and practical tests and assessments
- Supporting other apprentice engineers – As training progresses
- To carry out service, install and repair to British Standards and best practice
- Using an electronic PDA for coordination and document control when one is assigned to you
Applicants should ideally hold a full driving licence or be learning to drive, and a full DBS check will be carried out on the successful candidate.

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Comply with safety legislation, codes of practice, risk assessments, method statements, safe systems of work and apply control measures.
- Complete functionality tests of systems and components during commissioning systems.
- Apply and implement system design, planning and installations including additional components to existing systems.
- Carry out takeover procedure, diagnose and repair faults.
- Operate ICT equipment and systems to store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive digital data and electronic information.
- Comply with environmental and sustainability, regulations and standards.
- Complete functionality tests of systems and components during handover of systems.
- Carries out risk assessments.
- Communicate with others verbally for example, internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers using sector specific terminology.
- Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, as part of a team. Consult and engage with occupants or others who are or could be affected by work (for example vulnerable, older, and disabled people) and respond appropriately.
- Communicate with internal and external stakeholders using sector specific terminology through written means.
- Plan and install systems cabling.
- Carry out maintenance activities on fire detection and alarm systems and their components.
- Carry out maintenance activities on intrusion alarm, access control, video surveillance (CCTV) and their components.

Training schedule
Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Level 3 apprenticeship standard – will attend a combination of weekly/fortnightly day release at our Team Valley training centre based in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.
Requirements
Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- English (grade 4)
- Maths (grade 4)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements
Please note that although the head office is based in Southport, this position is based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
- IT Competent to be able to use a PDA and Microsoft packages (Word, Excel)
- Full, clean driving license or show evidence of working towards. (Expected to have passed Driving Theory Test within 6 months of employment).
- Must pass full DRB check
- Must pass British Standard Security Screening (BS7858)
- It would be an advantage to have some engineering experience. Though training is provided.
Candidates who have not yet passed their driving test will be collected by an Engineer and also dropped off (dependent upon where they live – may have to meet the Engineer at a central point).
