Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Learning responsibility for the repairs and maintenance for a large modern fleet of machinery on a progressive cereal and root crop farming business
- Work closely with the farm workshop team to ensure that machinery is proactively and systematically maintained and ensure records are kept to the highest standards
- Learn and understand the development of workshop systems and procedures in line with company protocol
- Assist in managing the stock and sourcing of spare parts and consumables with our suppliers
- Assist in ensuring machinery and workshop equipment is health and safety compliant
- Contribute to the farms health and safety team and help us drive towards being industry leading
- Assisting on working with other parts of the business closely to provide support and services; Golf Course, Property, Production
- Keep up to date with modern machinery developments and implement a comprehensive machinery maintenance schedule
- Maintain logs of repairs, servicing, and parts inventory alongside the farm mechanic

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Prepare and reinstate the work area for land-based engineering activities.
- Clean land-based machinery and equipment.
- Select and use PPE, tools and equipment required to undertake land-based engineering activities.
- Prepare land-based prime-movers, machinery and equipment for service, maintenance and repair activities.
- Prepare parts, components and sub-assemblies prior to reassembly, including inspecting, cleaning, refurbishing, sharpening, resealing, straightening, and balancing.
- Refit and re-assemble parts, components and sub-assemblies, ensuring their compatibility and relationship including timing and alignment.
- Select the appropriate lifting, supporting and securing equipment.
- Apply thermal bonding and separation methods to join, fabricate and repair materials and components.
- Complete organisational documentation and reports.
- Carry out work in compliance with legislative and organisational requirements.
- Lift, support and secure loads, land-based machinery, equipment and assemblies.
- Setup land-based prime movers, machinery and equipment to meet customer requirements.
- Connect, attach and fit land-based machinery equipment to prime movers.
- Service and maintain land-based prime-movers, machinery and equipment to manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Adopt safe working practices that ensure personal safety and the safety of others and the environment.
- Conduct static and basic operational inspections and check compliance with legislative safety requirements and system tests to establish actions to be taken.
- Interrogate control systems to view error codes, reset indicators and verify software updates.
- Carry out checks and tests to ensure prime-movers, machinery and equipment meet manufacturers specifications before and after repair.
- Identify and follow technical documentation and perform hydraulic or electrical repair activities on land-based machinery.
- Perform transmission or engine repair activities on land-based machinery.
- Record and interpret technical information relating to land-based service, maintenance and repair operations.
- Apply the principles of customer care when dealing with internal and external customers relevant to own role.
- Maintain service and warranty records, record data and report findings to stakeholders.
- Carry out pre delivery inspections and conduct assembly as required on land-based equipment and prime movers.

Training schedule
The typical delivery model for this apprenticeship is 4 days in the workplace and 1 day dedicated to off-the-job learning.
Apprentices will spend the majority of their time developing practical skills and gaining hands-on experience within the workplace, supported by their employer and assessor.
Off-the-job learning will usually take place through planned college attendance, online learning, workshops, tutorials, and training activities designed to support knowledge, skills, and behaviours required for the apprenticeship standard.
College delivery days will take place at the Riseholme College, Showground Campus, Scampton, Lincoln LN1 2ZR.

Other requirements
This is a physically demanding, hands-on role involving manual labour and practical engineering work. You should be comfortable working in a practical, sometimes dirty environment and be prepared to get fully involved in day-to-day tasks.
The role will involve working both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, so resilience and a strong work ethic are essential. Due to varying workloads, seasonal demands, and the wide range of machinery and equipment you will be working with, flexibility and adaptability are important. During peak periods, longer working hours may occasionally be required.
Due to the rural location and early start times, access to reliable transport to both the workplace and college is essential. Own transport would be highly advantageous.
Essential Requirements

- Commitment to attending college and successfully completing the apprenticeship programme
- Strong willingness to learn and develop technical skills
- Commitment to working towards a full driving licence if not already obtained
