Summary

The Metallurgical Apprentice will support the Metallurgy team in analysing, testing, and evaluating metals and alloys. This role provides hands-on experience in metallurgical processes, laboratory techniques, failure analysis, and quality assurance, while working towards a recognised apprenticeship qualification.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Technical Competence

  • Develop an understanding of material properties and behaviours.
  • Build up knowledge of correlation between various test types (hardness vs strength, impact of chemistry and cleanness etc.)
  • Build knowledge of key international standards (e.g. ASTM & ISO) and customer specifications.
  • Perform macro and microscopic examinations and against international standards and customer specifications.
  • Perform mechanical testing to obtain physical properties/characteristics data (tensile, hardness, impact testing).
  • Help maintain accurate laboratory records, reports and test data.
  • Assist with failure/non-conformity investigations.
  • Produce accurate and detailed test reports compliant to relevant testing standards.

Systems & Process Knowledge

  • Gain experience of Quality Management Systems.
  • Gain essential operations process knowledge and how they affect material/specimen properties (heat treatment, forging/rolling operations).
  • Gain hands-on experience of specimen preparation and compliance.

Problem-Solving & Continuous Improvement

  • Learn how to perform root cause analysis (5WHYs & 8D) and resolve technical issues.
  • Support continuous process improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in project planning and execution.

  • Comply with engineering standards and regulations. For example, British Standards (BS), International Organisation for Standardisation standards (ISO). European Norm (EN).
  • Analyse engineering and manufacturing data and information to support technical outputs. For example, read and interpret text, data, engineering drawings, work instructions, method statements, operation manuals.
  • Apply scientific, technical or engineering principles.
  • Apply problem solving techniques to solutions for identified technical problems.
  • Organise, plan and prioritise workflow and scheduling of work with stakeholders.
  • Identify, organise and use resources to complete tasks, considering cost, quality, safety, security and environmental impact.
  • Produce job specific technical outputs. For example, engineering drawings, quality control management, computer control programming, business improvement, adverse incident reports, technical investigations, equipment appraisals and specifications.
  • Provide support and guidance for handover of work to stakeholders. For example, checklists, product or process status, access to supporting documents.
  • Record information - paper based or electronic. For example, energy usage, equipment service records, test results, handover documents, checklists.

Training schedule

As part of your apprenticeship, and dependent on your prior attainment and age, you may be required to complete English and Maths Functional Skills, which is an integral part of your apprenticeship. Upon successful completion, you will be awarded additional certificates of recognition for these qualifications.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4/C or above)
  • Maths (grade 4/C or above)
