Summary

We are looking for a Trainee Quantity Surveyor to join our established multidisciplinary consultancy. We work in the food manufacturing industry, which is a great market to be in if you like projects and activities that work at pace. We have successfully nurtured QS apprentices previously with systems on place to support the right candidate. 

Wage

£20,000 a year

We offer a bonus scheme for successful completion of each year of the Apprenticeship course, we also offer a discretional bonus on a yearly basis upon successful completion of our agreed yearly progression plans

Monday to Friday 09.00 – 17.30 (one hour for lunch). However, some days, due to travelling, will exceed 7.5hrs a day.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Assist in the preparation of cost plans
  • Site visits to survey the existing site, or to establish how projects are proceeding
  • Prepare and issue tender documents and manage the tender process
  • Taking off drawings accurately to ensure correct quantities and details are established
  • Reviewing main contract tender documents & assessing scope of works
  • Obtaining competitive quotations from suppliers in a timely manner
  • Preparing building contracts
  • Carrying out site surveys as and when required to establish project progress and assess interim valuations
  • Manage the financial control of the overall project and report back to the client
  • Measure variations and agree with the main contractor any cost variations
  • Assist the Project Management team in preparing walkthroughs & programmes for jobs
  • If required, provide assistance with the preparation and submission of final accounts, variations and interim payment requests

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Information management - Provide data, information and advice for clients relevant to the surveying discipline.
  • Health and safety - Recommend solutions to ensure safe and secure working environments.
  • Construction technology - Provide advice relating to the construction technology of buildings and their materials.
  • Law - Negotiate and agree terms for acquisition/disposal of property, standard forms of building contracts or other property related contracts and liaise with legal advisers.
  • Consultancy - Manage instructions from engagement to completion.
  • Building surveys – Undertake inspections and surveys and provide advice and recommendations to clients relating to building surveys.
  • Prepare designs and specifications – Carry out the preparation of the design and specification of building projects from outline proposals to completion of the design and specification process.
  • Administer contracts – Implement administrative procedures for the running of a construction project. Issue instructions, deal with payment provisions, manage variation procedures and deal with completion and possession issues and the issuing of certificates.
  • Valuation and appraisal - Prepare capital and rental valuations of land and property for a range of formal and appraisal purposes and prepare client reports.
  • Land, property and planning law - Negotiate solutions to issues affecting both owners and occupiers of land and property including at least two of management, sales, lettings, purchase and/or planning.
  • Inspection and measurement – Undertake inspections of land and property and prepare related reports and advice. Use appropriate instrumentation to take measurements of land and property. Apply the appropriate guidance and use the appropriate basis to undertake measurements. Prepare and present measurements in an appropriate manner.
  • Tendering and procurement - Provide advice and recommendations as to appropriate procurement routes and manage the tendering processes relevant to them.
  • Costing and cost planning of construction works - Undertake the detailed quantification, costing and cost planning of complex construction works.
  • Manage efficiencies of construction contracts – Manage the construction phase of a construction project. Carry out life cycle costing and apply value engineering processes. Prepare data, reports and forecasts.

Training schedule

Chartered Surveyor Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship (Quantity Surveyor Pathway) BSc (Hons) plus APC with RICS to become chartered.

One day per week on NTU City campus.

Requirements

Essential qualifications

A Level in:

Three subjects (grade BBC minimum - 112 UCAS points)

Level 4 HNC in:

Construction related subject (grade Merit)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

The vacancy will require driving to sites for surveys, site visits, site meetings and project progress reports. Arctica offers a system of claiming back business mileage via expenses.

About this employer

Our office is based in the beautiful & historic market town of Stamford. There are currently eight of us in the team and we are a mix of Architectural and Cost Consultancy professionals that works nationally and internationally on industrial and food manufacturing projects. It’s a niche market to be involved in equating to 24% of the UK's manufacturing turnover
