Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • The job role here at ATL is quite diverse, so you'll get a really useful range of experience
  • Full on-the-job training will be given and you will be mentored by experienced teachers to help learners achieve their study goals and career development, with additional support from the rest of our friendly team and specialist tutors to develop your own knowledge and skills
  • You'll be learning how to provide teaching support in and out of the classroom to ATL learners, who are aged from 16 years old. As part of the team, you'll assist with keeping learners focussed, preparing them for assessment, producing teaching resources, classroom displays and sharing ideas for creating a positive learning environment
  • Training on and off the job will enable you to work with the lead classroom teacher to support learners, make sure lessons run smoothly and lead smaller group activities
  • For some working days, you may be assigned to help individual learners who have specific support needs
  • Your role will include ensuring learners understand the work set, know their learning objectives and stay on task in order to make progress
  • At ATL, you could be working in different departments on different days, covering animal care, beauty, business, child care and more!

  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

  • We'll support you to develop your skills, knowledge and experience as you work towards your Level 3 Teaching Assistants qualification
  • Your weekly day-release for study will be right here at Achievement Training in Plymouth city centre

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

  • A certain level of resilience is needed as the role involves working with teenage and adult learners who may have personal issues that could impact on their learning
  • Full training and support on managing learner behaviours will be part of your Apprenticeship
  • Please note that, due to the nature of the support work and training to be undertaken, the role is not suitable for remote work and needs to be carried out in-person, on-site
  • As part of our commitment to Safer Recruitment in Education, the successful Apprentice will require a range of pre-employment checks, including an Enhanced DBS check (organised and paid for by ATL)
