What you'll do at work

This accredited level 3 apprenticeship is geared toward training the next generation of Light Commercial Vehicle Service Technicians. But what does the role involve?

Technicians service and repair light vehicles (e.g., Vans) up to 3.5 tonnes. Technicians are trained in all areas of vehicle mechanics and electronics, from engines and exhaust systems to security features and diagnostic processes.

Get involved in Training and Learning:

  • Actively participate in on-the-job and classroom training
  • Develop skills in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining light commercial vehicles
  • Attend all training sessions and complete coursework and assessments

Understand Vehicle Maintenance and Repair:

  • Assist with routine tasks like oil changes, tire rotations, and brake inspections
  • Learn to perform complex diagnostics and repairs under supervision
  • Use diagnostic tools to identify and solve vehicle problems

Become familiar with Documentation and Reporting:

  • Keep accurate records of services, parts used, and time spent on each job
  • Prepare detailed reports on diagnostic findings and repairs
  • Ensure all documentation meets company and industry standards

Deliver excellent Customer Service:

  • Interact professionally and courteously with customers
  • Help explain vehicle issues and services performed to customers
  • Address customer concerns and ensure satisfaction

  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
  • Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
  • Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
  • Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
  • Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
  • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
  • Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
  • Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

Training schedule

This is a Light Vehicle Technician Apprenticeship, delivered by Remit Group.

Training is delivered in the workplace and on block release at the Remit Academy in Derby. This means you will be required to stay in a hotel for 15 separate weeks (Mon - Fri) over the duration of the programme. All associated costs for training are met by the employer and there will be no cost to you.

You will also be assigned a dedicated Development Coach who will visit you every 4-6 weeks in the workplace and remotely, giving 1-2-1 information, advice and guidance.

As a result, you will receive the following qualification:

  • Motor Vehicle Service & Maintenance Technician (light vehicle)
  • F Gas air conditioning qualification

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

  • Maths (grade C or 4)
  • English (grade C or 4)
