Summary

We are currently looking for a Strategic Buyer Apprentice to join our dynamic team. During the 24-month apprenticeship programme you will develop the skills, knowledge and experience needed to begin a successful career in strategic purchasing.

Wage

£21,157.50 a year

  • NMW for 18-21 old £21,157.50 p.a
  • NMW for 21 old and over   £24,784.50 p.a

Supply chain practitioner (fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG)) (level 3)
Hours
Monday - Friday. Flexible start and finish times. Generally people start between 7am-9 am and finish between 4pm-6pm. Employers can be flexible with arranging the suitable start and finish times for the apprentice depending on their commute time.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Learn purchasing approval processes and how internal teams interact with suppliers.
  • Gain experience using ERP systems (e.g. Dynamics AX) and BI tools for spend reporting and supplier data.
  • Support core procurement processes including RFQs, contract approvals, and compliance requirements.
  • Support live Requests for Quotation (RFQs) by gathering data and preparing quotation comparisons.
  • Track and monitor supplier KPIs including cost, quality, and delivery performance.
  • Gain exposure to forecasting and demand planning processes.
  • Learn how demand fluctuations influence purchasing decisions, stock levels, and supplier capacity.
  • Conduct supplier communication, bid analysis, and recommendation preparation.
  • Monitor supplier performance and maintain KPI dashboards.
  • Build commercial awareness through market research and supplier reviews.
  • Analyse risks, cost drivers, and market trends.
  • Manage supplier performance, relationships, and continuous improvement activities.

What you'll learn

  • Manage the flow of fast-moving consumer goods products or services based on evolving and changing information.
  • Use standard operating procedures.
  • Support customers with supply chain enquiries.
  • Use IT systems for the supply chain; Company and customer systems. Applies cyber security and GDPR regulations and policies.
  • Use continuous improvement techniques in the fast-moving consumer goods supply chain.
  • Lead and participate in problem solving activities: 5 whys, fishbone analysis.
  • Use capacity planning to inform fast-moving consumer goods supply chain processes.
  • Apply team working principles.
  • Escalate issues and tasks.
  • Analyse data against supply chain key performance indicators to identify trends and themes that affect the fast-moving consumer goods supply chain.
  • Plan and adhere to customer lead times.
  • Use data analysis outcomes to inform decision making in the supply chain function.
  • Develop and implement a supply plan, for example, supply planning, production planning, demand planning, operations planning - logistics, commercial planning.
  • Use order management tools to capture customer orders.
  • Communicate with others verbally for example, colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Communicate in writing with others for example, internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers.
  • Comply with health and safety legislation, regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Follow equity, diversity, and inclusion principles.
  • Apply quality assurance procedures.

Training schedule

Working towards Supply Chain Practitioner Level 3 apprenticeship standard. Training will take place at the employer's site.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)
