Summary

Level 3 Teaching Assistant apprenticeship (15–18 months) prepares school-based staff to provide advanced classroom support. It covers pupil assessment, SEN support, safeguarding, behaviour management, child development and curriculum delivery through on‑the‑job training and structured learning.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Provide personal, health and welfare support to pupils
  • Ensure pupil safety and access to learning
  • Build positive relationships and meet individual needs
  • Promote inclusion, equality and pupil independence
  • Support classroom activities and teacher-led learning
  • Assist with behaviour management and monitor progress
  • Maintain records and carry out admin tasks
  • Prepare classroom, resources and displays
  • Support literacy, numeracy and basic ICT
  • Follow safeguarding, health and safety procedures
  • Work with staff, parents and other professionals
  • Supervise pupils during breaks, trips and activities

  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4/C or above)
  • Mathematics (grade 4/C or above)

Desirable qualifications

Level 2 in:

Early Years or related (grade 4/C or above)
