Summary

As a Software Developer Apprentice, you’ll play a meaningful role in shaping technology that directly impacts communities across the UK. The apprenticeship is delivered as a series of seminars, workshops and learning projects. At the same time, you will be combining real-world experience with your professional development.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Join a development team delivering software solutions for central and local government. 
  • Write, test and maintain code for web-based applications. 
  • Contribute to the full Software Development Life Cycle — from planning and coding to testing and deployment. 
  • Apply the skills gained during the apprenticeship to real NEC projects. 
  • Take part in team meetings, sprint planning and code reviews. 
  • Learn continuously through structured training, project work and mentoring.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • create logical and maintainable code
  • develop effective user interfaces
  • link code to data sets
  • test code and analyse results to correct errors found using unit testing
  • conduct a range of test types, such as Integration, System, User Acceptance, Non-Functional, Performance and Security testing.
  • identify and create test scenarios
  • apply structured techniques to problem solving, debug code and understand the structure of programmes in order to identify and resolve issues
  • create simple software designs to effectively communicate understanding of the program
  • create analysis artefacts, such as use cases and/or user stories
  • build, manage and deploy code into the relevant environment
  • apply an appropriate software development approach according to the relevant paradigm (for example object oriented, event driven or procedural)
  • follow software designs and functional or technical specifications
  • follow testing frameworks and methodologies
  • follow company, team or client approaches to continuous integration, version and source control
  • communicate software solutions and ideas to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • apply algorithms, logic and data structures
  • interpret and implement a given design whist remaining compliant with security and maintainability requirements

Training schedule

During this apprenticeship, you will follow a fully supported training programme with LearnTech, delivered through combined weekly remote classroom-based training, workplace assessment/training and online learning working towards completing the Software Developer.

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4/C)
  • Maths (grade 4/C)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

You must meet the following eligibility criteria to apply for the role:

  • Have been a UK/EEA resident for the last 3 years
  • Hold valid residency status
  • Have the right to work in the UK

Due to current Government Apprenticeship guidelines, we are unfortunately unable to consider graduates that are already educated to a comparable or higher level than the Level 4 Apprenticeship.
