Summary

The HCSW will work under the supervision of registered nurses and the shift co-ordinator to deliver high-quality, compassionate care to patients, with a particular focus on those receiving cancer treatment. This role is designed to support structured training through the Care Certificate and Level 2 Apprenticeship programme.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Work towards completion of the Care Certificate standards
Monitor and record patients’ vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation) under direct supervision and report abnormal results and concerns to nursing staff.
Accurately measure and record height and weight.
Undertake delegated clinical tasks relevant to the area (e.g., ECGs, urinalysis, MRSA screening, documentation in digital health records) once competency has been achieved and approved.
Assist patients with nutrition, including menu completion and feeding support, in collaboration with ward hosts/hostesses.
Apply infection prevention and control practices, attending all mandatory training and be willing to challenge others poor practice where necessary.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Work in line with legislation, policies, standards, local ways of working and codes of conduct that apply to own role
  • Work within the scope of practice, the limits of own knowledge and skills, escalating and reporting to others when needed
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide safe non-discriminatory person-centred care and support in line with individual’s established consent
  • Implement a duty of care, recognising and responding to safeguarding and protection concerns and acting in the best interest of individuals to ensure they do not come to harm
  • Recognise and respond to the signs and symptoms that an individual is in pain, distress or discomfort to maximise comfort and wellbeing
  • Recognise and respond to changes in individuals’ health and wellbeing
  • Perform basic life support
  • Undertake physiological measurements, selecting and using the correct tools or equipment
  • Assist the registered practitioner in encouraging individuals to take or use their prescribed medication
  • Promote access to fluids and nutrition in line with an individual’s care plan
  • Support individuals with activities of daily living to maximise independence in line with their desired outcomes and plan of care
  • Contribute to the storage of supplies and equipment
  • Contribute to the cleaning, disinfecting and disposal of materials and equipment

Functional skills in:

English and Maths (grade Level 2 or equivalent)

After this apprenticeship

On successful completion of the apprenticeship you will transition into a Band3 HCSW role.  As a Band 3 HCSW you will carry out a range of clinical duties with minimal/no supervision, including, for example, blood pressure monitoring, oxygen saturation levels, body temperature, pulse rate and respiration rate, glucose monitoring, collection and testing of urine samples/faecal samples/sputum samples and wound swabs ensuring delivery of high-quality patient care at all times. NB: this list is not exhaustive and will vary depending on the area of work.
