Summary

 As an Assistant Accountant Apprentice, you will provide support to both internal and external stakeholders in carrying out financial and accounting activities within an organisation. Working closely under the guidance of experienced finance professionals, you will develop practical knowledge while contributing to key finance tasks.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

As an Assistant Accountant Apprentice, you will support internal and external customers in managing financial and accounting activities within an organisation. Working under the supervision of experienced finance professionals, you will assist in preparing financial reports, reconciling accounts, processing transactions, and ensuring compliance with relevant financial regulations.

This apprenticeship provides a structured pathway to a career in finance, with opportunities for progression into professional accounting roles.

Typical Duties Include:

  • Assisting with monthly and year-end financial reporting.
    Processing financial transactions, including accounts payable and receivable.
  • Reconciling bank statements and resolving discrepancies.
  • Assisting in the preparation of VAT returns and tax computations.
  • Using financial and accounting software to record and analyse data.
  • Supporting the preparation of management accounts and financial statements.
  • Ensuring compliance with financial regulations, including anti-money laundering.
  • Assisting with audits and control account reconciliations.
  • Communicating financial information to non-finance stakeholders.
  • Maintaining financial records and ensuring data accuracy.
  • Using digital systems securely to protect financial data.
  • Keeping up to date with changes in finance regulations and accounting best practices.

What you'll learn

  • Record transactional data.
  • Use the organisation’s standard tools and processes to examine data to identify transactional issues such as, reconciliations and inconsistencies between invoices.
  • Recognise and rectify routine errors, escalating as necessary.
  • Plan and review accounting and finance tasks.
  • Communicate with stakeholders to deliver accurate and timely results, avoiding jargon, using language tailored to the audience and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.
  • Use finance and accounting software packages to accurately input and manage data to contribute to routine accounting tasks.
  • Handle data and digital technology in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.

Training schedule

As the successful apprentice you will undertake an Apprenticeship in Level 2 Accounts and Finance, to include assessment in Skills, Knowledge and Behaviours of a Finance Officer) Functional Skills in Maths and English (where applicable), completion of your End Point Assessment.  During your time on the apprenticeship programme, you will also be expected to complete and document 20% off-job-training. 
 
The apprenticeship will be delivered by South Gloucestershire & Stroud College over15 Months. 
 
You will be required to attend CAMPUS on day release for your studies, and an assessor will visit you out on site. 
 
You will be assigned a supervisor/mentor within the workplace, who will support you to develop your workplace skills, knowledge and behaviours throughout the duration of your apprenticeship programme.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

Maths and English (grade A-C or 4-9)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
