Summary

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Stock up shelves in the shop and P-med area from overstock and make a list of items to be ordered and give to supervisor or staff in charge of the shop.
  • Double check price of items that arrive under supervision from EPoS Rx and arrange them on the shelves.
  • Pricing should be done by comparing the price on invoice with the price that item scans.
  • Check expiry dates of all items received and call attention of supervisor if any is less than 1 year. 
  • Rotate stock by putting shorter dated stock in front and longer dated ones at the back on the shelves.
  • Ensure the shop surroundings and P-med area are tidy, clean and well arranged at all times.  - Pick any litters that customers might have dropped on the floor.  Brush the shop floor or P-med area if it’s dirty and mop the floor if there’s any spillage.

Other duties include:

  • Taking in prescriptions and handing out medicines.
  • Accepting deliveries and handling stock.
  • Selling over-the-counter medicines.
  • Offering advice on common ailments.
  • Answering customer queries over the phone and in person.
  • Preparing and labelling medicines.
  • Sales and general store duties e.g. product displays and cash transactions
  • Be supported to qualify for the NVQ2 training
  • Support dispensers in dispensing medicines

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • receive and log prescriptions
  • assemble prescribed items, undertake an in-process accuracy check and issue prescribed items
  • work according to legislative requirements, and organisational policies
  • order, receive, maintain and issue pharmaceutical stock
  • provide appropriate advice when authorised on supplied medicines and products, their storage and disposal
  • work within the parameters of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the pharmacy
  • act in accordance with systems and organisational governance
  • recognise and act within the pharmacy regulatory, legal and ethical standards
  • support the team in the development of others
  • maintain and further develop your own skills and knowledge through development activities; maintain evidence of your personal development and actively prepare for and participate in appraisal
  • communicate effectively with the public, carers and other health and social care professionals using a range of techniques to determine their needs, and keep information confidential
  • handle information (record, report and store information) related to individuals and/or patients in line with local and national policies
  • use pharmacy IT systems and other IT resources according to legislative requirements and organisational policies
  • demonstrate person centred care and support within a pharmacy setting
  • make pharmacy patients and patient safety your first concern
  • use judgement and refer service user as appropriate to another member of the team, GP, healthcare worker, manufacturer etc
  • maintain the interests of patients and the health of the public
  • promote and advocate equality, diversity and inclusion
  • promote healthy lifestyles to customers
  • work safely within the parameters of your role using Standard Operating Procedures
  • apply policies which relate to health and safety at work
  • act appropriately in situations to prevent harm to yourself and others

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

  • Pharmacy Services Assistant Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard
  • Level 2 functional skills in maths and English (if required)
  • End-Point Assessment (EPA)
  • Apprentices will be required to produce work and build an e-portfolio of evidence through blended learning which will include practical and written knowledge assessments which are carried out in the workplace
  • There will be an (EPA) end point assessment at the end of the apprenticeship

After this apprenticeship: 

On completion of the intermediate apprenticeship, individuals will have the opportunity to apply to progress on to the advanced apprenticeship, they may also be offered full-time employment by the employer.
