Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Assisting with the servicing and maintenance of injection mould tools in line with TPM schedules
- Supporting repairs to injection mould tools following breakdowns
- Assisting production teams at the moulding press with basic repairs and maintenance tasks
- Supporting minor modifications and improvements to existing injection mould tools
- Learning to interpret technical drawings and tooling documentation
- Maintaining a clean, safe, and organised work area
- Develop an understanding of electrical, hydraulic, and water systems associated with injection mould tools
- Build fault-finding and problem-solving skills with guidance from senior team members
- Assist with work on production injection mould tools in the moulding press environment
- Organise your time effectively and maintain accurate maintenance and service records

Formal training is delivered at HWGTA, located at Mc Kenzie Way, Worcester WR4 9GN.

More training information
Year 1 - 39 weeks are spent at HWGTA Training Centre developing practical engineering skills, alongside one day per week in the classroom, completing the theoretical elements of the EAL Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.
Year 2 - predominantly based in your company, returning to the Training Centre one day per week to continue and complete the specialised elements of their Level 3 Diploma (Development Knowledge).
Years 3-4 - Based full-time in Shapers' developing practical skills and knowledge in preparation for the End Point Assessment to gain your Level 3 Toolmaker.
Additional training for functional skills in English and maths will be undertaken if needed.

After this apprenticeship
On completion of the apprenticeship, you would typically progress into a fully qualified toolmaker role within the business, working independently on the manufacture, maintenance and repair of precision tooling.
