Summary
As an Apprentice Painter & Decorator, you will work with our Trade Operatives on a day-to-day basis conducting painting and decorating tasks in EMH Homes properties and other related properties to the specified quality and performance.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
The Property Services, Internal Maintenance Service (IMS) are responsible for conducting high quality repairs and maintenance on our customers’ homes across the geographical footprint of EMH homes.
1. To work in an effective and efficient manner at all times and to inform line management at the earliest opportunity, or any other nominated person, where this is not possible.
2. To be responsible for keeping a clean and tidy appearance and ensuring that any IMS vehicles or equipment are kept clean in good order, if allocated one. Every attempt must be made to prevent theft of vehicle and equipment.
3. To use existing and future technology as necessary to effectively carry out work or improve the efficiency of the service.
4. To meet the Apprentice Mentor / Team Leader / Works Manager as required, at a specified time to receive work instructions.
5. To participate at team meetings to ensure continuous improvement of performance at Property Services and be willing to learn and contribute to the development of the IMS as and when required throughout the duration of the apprenticeship.
6. To make and receive telephone calls / messages as required. To acknowledge these calls and respond accordingly.
7. To be aware of responsibilities when entering properties, (including to keep tenants informed, and on completion of the job to leave tenants property in a clean and tidy condition).
8. To attend a designated college course and work to and achieve all theoretical and practical requirements set out by the college.
9. You will be expected to undergo designated training sessions as necessary, which may be out of normal working hours and / or at other establishments as may be required.
11. To ensure all duties carried out comply with:
a) Current Health and Safety issues
b) Working conditions normally inherent in the job
c) Customer care standards
d) EMH homes and EMH group policies and procedure, specifications, quality standard and work rules.
12. You will be expected to contribute and work towards on-going polices on Community Development, Value for Money, Environmental Issues, Crime and Disorder and Equal Opportunities.
13. To carry out reasonable additional duties / responsibilities where necessary and to accept other such duties as requested by the Works Manager / Team Leader / Apprentice Mentor.

- Check and safely use working at height equipment for example steps, hop-ups, and podiums.
- Identify hazards and comply with risk assessments, method statements, control measures and safe systems of work and report to manager when required.
- Read and interpret information for example from drawings, specifications, work instructions, manufacturer’s safety data sheets and manufacturer’s information such as colour charts and notations.
- Ensure materials are used efficiently and sustainably including suitable disposal of waste.
- Prepare work area: remove and store furnishings, fixtures and equipment and reinstate.
- Protect and prepare a safe working area, surrounding surfaces and environment.
- Select and use hand tools and equipment.
- Maintain and store hand tools.
- Select, use, maintain and store power tools.
- Prepare internal and external untreated surfaces ready to receive finishing systems for example: trowelled finishes plaster or render, plasterboard, timber and timber sheet materials; metals (ferrous and non-ferrous).
- Prepare internal previously coated surfaces ready to receive finishing systems for example trowelled finishes plaster or render, plasterboard, timber and timber sheet materials.
- Prepare external previously coated surfaces ready to receive finishing systems for example trowelled finishes plaster or render, timber and timber sheet materials; metals (ferrous and non-ferrous).
- Prepare and apply surface coatings to untreated external surfaces for example brick, stone, render, wood, metal using a brush and roller.
- Apply solvent borne and water borne coating systems using brush and roller to ceilings, walls, linear work (skirting board and architrave) doors: flush and panelled and opening windows.
- Prepare and apply foundation paper: Cross lining around socket and switches, internal and external angles.
- Prepare and apply Wallcoverings: Free match or random match finishing papers, vertical hanging, around socket and switches, internal and external angle.
- Carry out minor repair for example third party damage or post application defect.
- Apply team working principles.
- Verbally communicate with others, applying construction terminology.
- Communicate in writing with others for example, internal and external customers, colleagues.
- Follow equity, diversity and inclusion guidance.

Essential qualifications
GCSE in:

Other requirements
- You will be attending Derby College one day a week for training so will need to consider how you will get to and from the campus
- As a mobile worker, your hours of work are based on travel time to/from Longfield House, Ilkeston
- Apprentices who do not drive will need to be able to get to a pick up point i.e. Longfield House, Ilkeston.
