Summary

Start your sales career at an award-winning energy consultancy in Birmingham. As a Junior Sales Development Representative, you'll learn how to find and speak to UK businesses about their energy, help them cut costs and move towards net zero, while working towards a Level 4 Sales Executive qualification over 18 months.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Research UK businesses to find the right people to speak to about their energy
  • Make outbound calls and send LinkedIn messages and emails to start conversations with potential customers
  • Book qualified meetings for our Energy Consultants
  • Follow up with warm leads from marketing campaigns and website enquiries
  • Get back in touch with previous clients when their energy contracts are coming up for renewal
  • Keep our CRM accurate and up to date with notes, contacts and renewal dates
  • Hit daily and monthly targets for calls, conversations and meetings booked
  • Work closely with Energy Consultants to understand what makes a good opportunity
  • Take part in team training, coaching sessions and role-plays to sharpen sales skills
  • Study towards the Level 4 Sales Executive apprenticeship, with dedicated time set aside each week for coursework

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Sales planning and preparation: Set effective targets using sales forecasts. Prioritise customers and activities to grow account value and maximise return-on-investment in line with your organisation’s strategy. Formulate or refine customer plans and objectives. Create efficient territory plans where appropriate.
  • Customer engagement: Effectively communicate and interpret customer information exchanged through written, verbal and non-verbal communication. Develop a customer engagement style that effectively opens sales conversations, builds rapport, enhances customer relationships, and adapts to different customer’s social preferences.
  • Customer needs analysis: Be highly skilled at effective questioning and active listening techniques to understand the customer’s needs, guide the sales conversation appropriately, create mutual understanding, and build trust and affinity with customers.
  • Propose and present solutions: Develop sales proposals and deliver them using a presentation style and technique appropriate for your customer. Present relevant products and/or services, explain features and their advantages, and clearly articulate the value and benefit of the solution for the specific customer. Use and adapt a range of techniques to draw-out and overcome common sales objections.
  • Negotiate: Research the customer’s likely desired outcomes and negotiating stance. Develop responses to likely objections. Identify your own organisation’s needs, such as minimum price and acceptable terms. Negotiate or trade variables effectively.
  • Closing Sales: Be attuned to verbal and non-verbal buying-signals andmove to close at an appropriate point in sales conversations. Develop ethical techniques to close sales and confirm customers’ purchase agreement.
  • Gathering Intelligence: Collect, analyse and interpret market intelligence and share it appropriately and effectively within your organisation.
  • Time Management: Use and adapt appropriate tools and techniques to prioritise and manage your time effectively.
  • Collaboration and team work: Contribute effectively within a team environment. Work collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders. Manage communications with the cross-functional team in relation to the effective delivery of your sales, such as finance and service delivery. Support continual business improvement by sharing best practice with sales team colleagues and assist the marketing team to develop new marketing collateral.
  • Customer experience management: Deliver a positive customer experience. Manage customer enquiries and issues effectively. Take proactive action to prevent and minimise customer concerns and complaints. Handle all customer interactions professionally to the customer’s satisfaction.
  • Digital skills: Effectively use digital tools to conduct research and target customers in line with the overall sales strategy. Able to deliver presentations and meetings using digital communication. Complete accurate records and process sales in accordance with your organisation’s policies, procedures and digital CRM systems.

Training schedule

Training will be delivered through a mix of on-the-job coaching at our Birmingham city centre office and structured learning with your apprenticeship training provider.

  • At work: day-to-day coaching from experienced Energy Consultants and the sales leadership team, including call reviews, role-plays, shadowing and weekly 1:1s
  • Off-the-job training: one day per week (20% of your working hours) set aside for apprenticeship study, coursework and assessments towards the Level 4 Sales Executive standard
  • With your training provider: regular workshops, tutor sessions and online learning, delivered remotely or at the provider's location depending on the module
  • Duration: 18 months, followed by end-point assessment to achieve the Level 4 Sales Executive qualification

Additional training information:

The Level 4 Sales Executive apprenticeship is delivered alongside your day-to-day role, so you'll apply what you learn in real time on live accounts and prospects.

  • Structure: the 18-month programme is split into a learning phase (around 15 months) followed by an end-point assessment period (around 3 months), where you'll demonstrate what you've learned through a work-based project, presentation and professional discussion
  • Format: a blend of live workshops, online learning, self-study and one-to-one tutor support, with regular progress reviews involving you, your line manager and your training coach
  • In-house support: you'll be paired with a workplace mentor from our sales team who'll support you through the apprenticeship alongside your training provider
  • Functional Skills: if you don't already have Level 2 English and Maths (GCSE grade 4/C or equivalent), these will be included as part of your apprenticeship at no cost to you

GCSE in:

Other requirements

  • You'll need the right to work in the UK for the full duration of the apprenticeship (18 months minimum)
  • You must be able to commute reliably to our Birmingham city centre office three days per week
  • This role involves significant time on the phone, so a confident and professional telephone manner is essential
  • You'll be expected to follow our data protection and GDPR procedures when handling client information on the CRM
  • Apprenticeship funding rules require you to have lived in the UK or EEA for the past three years (some exceptions apply - check gov.uk for details)

After this apprenticeship

On successful completion of your Level 4 Sales Executive apprenticeship, you'll move into a full Sales Development Representative role at The National Energy Hub on a competitive base salary plus commission (OTE £38,000–£45,000+).

From there, the typical path is:

  • Energy Consultant / Account Manager within 6-12 months of qualifying - owning your own client base, running the full sales cycle and earning OTE of £40,000 - £70,000+
  • Senior Energy Consultant as you build a book of business and develop expertise in procurement, renewables or flexibility
  • Team Lead, Sales Manager or specialist routes into areas like net zero consultancy, sustainability advisory or key account management as the business grows
