Pharmacy Assistant Apprenticeship – Compound Pharmacy [SOUTHAMPTON]

About the role

As a Pharmacy Assistant Apprentice, you will support the day-to-day running of our specialist compounding pharmacy, working closely with the pharmacy team to ensure prescriptions are prepared, dispensed, and dispatched safely and accurately. This role is based within our online pharmacy operation and focuses on the preparation of bespoke medications tailored to individual patient prescriptions.

You will complete a Level 2 Pharmacy Services Assistant Apprenticeship alongside your role, with full training and support provided.

Key duties include:

  • Supporting the dispensing and dispatching of prescriptions for our online pharmacy services
  • Assisting with the preparation and compounding of bespoke medications on a named-patient basis against prescriptions (under supervision)
  • Handling stock, deliveries, and maintaining accurate records
  • Using pharmacy systems to process prescriptions and maintain patient information
  • Responding to patient and customer queries via email and telephone
  • Maintaining high standards of cleanliness, health & safety, and confidentiality
  • Working closely with the pharmacy team to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient service delivery

What we’re looking for:

  • A genuine interest in healthcare, pharmacy, and precision-based medication preparation
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow processes accurately
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced and highly regulated environment
  • Reliable, punctual, and professional
  • Basic IT and administrative skills
  • No previous pharmacy experience is required, full training will be provided

Apprenticeship details:

  • Qualification: Level 2 Pharmacy Services Assistant Apprenticeship
    Duration: Typically 15 months
  • Training delivered alongside your role through blended learning
  • This role is primarily non-patient facing, with customer queries managed via email and telephone. Any patient-facing elements required for the apprenticeship will be facilitated through a partner pharmacy
  • Apprentices must be able to commit to contracted working hours and guided learning hours

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • receive and log prescriptions
  • assemble prescribed items, undertake an in-process accuracy check and issue prescribed items
  • work according to legislative requirements, and organisational policies
  • order, receive, maintain and issue pharmaceutical stock
  • provide appropriate advice when authorised on supplied medicines and products, their storage and disposal
  • work within the parameters of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the pharmacy

Training schedule

Pharmacy Services Assistant Level 2 (GCSE) and Functional Skills if required.

Desirable qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

Maths and English (grade 4-9)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

After this apprenticeship

This is an exciting role that will include engaging with customers and clients to provide prescription counter services, advice, housekeeping duties such as stock rotation and stock replenishment, helping to deliver a variety of public health services whilst gaining a pharmacy qualification.
