Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Liasing with our design studio you will be hands on working in a busy environment creating print and eye-catching graphics for exhibitions, conferences, displays and vehicle wraps. We produce a large and bespoke range of graphic solutions
  • You would also be trained to use industry standard creative software and be trained to use large format and medium format Mimaki, Epson printing machines, Vinyl cutters and laminators
  • From a given brief and artwork files you will print and create an assortment of graphic print, signs and wall coverings, this will include printing, vinyl cutting, laying up, laminating and on site fitting once trained

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Interpret information, for example customer briefs, specifications and work instructions.
  • Conduct site survey.
  • Calculate costs and prepare quotations.
  • Plan and schedule work.
  • Prepare for signage work.
  • Use graphic design software to design signage.
  • Create pre-fabrication files/instructions.
  • Select and use materials and components.
  • Assemble signs.
  • Trim, clean and add fixing features to signage such as eyelets, hinges and brackets, as required.
  • Protect materials and signs to prevent damage during manufacture, transportation and storage.
  • Apply, install or erect signs.
  • Check signage materials and products against quality requirements.
  • Identify and document risks and hazards in the workplace; advise on and apply control measures.
  • Comply with health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Comply with organisational and statutory environmental and sustainability considerations: safe disposal of waste, recycling of materials and efficient use of resources.
  • Select, set up, complete pre-checks and operate sign-making machinery, tools and equipment.
  • Maintain work area, tools and equipment for example, charge batteries and sharpen blades.
  • Use access equipment in the installation process, for example ladders, fixed and mobile platforms.
  • Communicate with colleagues and/or stakeholders – verbal, written or electronic; use industry terminology.
  • Complete documentation for example job sheets, maintenance records.
  • Rectify or report issues.

Training schedule

Signage Technician Level 3.

You will be training in Alcester, Warwickshire and working 40-hours per week with 20% of the time allocated to your training providers curriculum.

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)

Desirable qualifications

A Level in:

  • Art/Design (grade C)
  • English (grade C)

Other requirements

This would require lifting of heavy objects from time to time when transferring media rolls and also handling large graphic panels.
