Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

You’ll be supported by a Site Manager and wider site team, and you won’t be expected to know everything from day one.

  • Support the Site Management team with the day‑to‑day running of a residential building site
  • Help ensure projects are delivered safely, on programme and to quality standards
  • Maintain health and safety procedures, ensuring a safe working environment for all
  • Assist with coordinating deliveries and storing materials safely and efficiently
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, subcontractors, suppliers and members of the public
  • Learn to review site activities, identify issues and suggest practical solutions
  • Ensure all college coursework and assessments are completed on time and to the required standard

This position is site‑based and operates on a rota of six weeks on site followed by one residential week at Cinderford College (accommodation provided). Site locations may change to meet business needs and to support your learning. You’ll be required to commit at least 20% of your working time to off‑the‑job learning, ensuring coursework is completed on time and to the required standard, and that all assessments are passed throughout the apprenticeship.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Identify risk of activities and encourage all employees to demonstrate safety-conscious behaviours.
  • Assess, identify and record the environmental impact of projects.
  • Assist in the implementation of the most appropriate solutions for construction projects.
  • Use effective management principles and be able to supervise construction workers.
  • Understand overall plan for project and measure and record progress against plan.
  • Assess and report on quality standards and assist in commissioning of finished construction projects.
  • Understand financial and legal constraints and measure and record progress against budget.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade Level 4 (Grade C) or above)
  • Maths (grade Level 4 (Grade C) or above)

A full driving licence, or be willing to obtain one during the apprenticeship programme. A basic DBS check (we’ll arrange this for you). To be comfortable changing site locations to broaden your experience.
