Summary

At JGP Group, you will be working as part of a team, supervised by qualified mechanics who are responsible for looking after a fleet of vehicles, inspection, service and repairs, troubleshooting, carrying out pre MOT work to VOSA standards.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Shadowing a qualified garage mechanic.
  • Ensure all equipment is working correct and efficiently meeting health, safety and maintenance requirements.

  • Follow all SOP's.
  • Carry out service and repair work on HGV and trailers in a timely manner adhering to industry standard. 
  • Carry out inspections and complete paperwork.
  • Carry out pre-MOT work to VOSA standards.
  • Liaise with garage stock controller to order parts and complete traceability. 
  • Carry out work under defects from site and prioritise to ensure continuous production.
  • Observe highway code and drive company vehicle with maximum due care and protection.
  • Attend work at other sites, ensure all equipment is organised before setting off.
  • Attend vehicle breakdowns and ensure safety at the roadside.
  • Liaise with fleet manager to ensure vehicle down time is kept to a minimum.
  • Liaise with transport to ensure vehicles and trailers are inspected in accordance with the planned maintenance schedule and that equipment requiring attention due to a defect are dealt with promptly promoting a nil defect policy.
  • Comply with the site health & safety requirements carrying g out risk assessments and assisting with the writing of SOP’s communicating with the Health & Safety manager.
  • Ensure all repairs are carried out in a timely manner to ensure all road worthy.
  • Carry out correct completion of garage paperwork and filled in correctly.
  • Attend all training courses requested by the company to meet the business and the individual objectives.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
  • The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
  • Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
  • The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
  • Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
  • Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
  • Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
  • Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
  • Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
  • To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.

Training schedule

Training will be at North Lindsey College where you will access a wide range of facilities on offer; delivered via day release.

You will undertake the Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship standard.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

Maths and English (grade 4 or equivalent)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

You must be able to travel to and from work and college.

A full, clean UK driving licence is considered essential for this role.

You must be aged 18 years or over due to shift patterns and health & safety regulations.

Provide the right to work in the UK Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that's part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
