Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
As part of your apprenticeship, you will be enrolled onto a Level 3 Lift Truck and Powered Access Engineering Technician for 36-months. You will be fully supported by our partnered college to achieve this qualification, having 1-2-1 advice and support, e-learning materials, and a whole team of experts on hand for advice and technical knowledge at your office.
Amey Defence Equipment is a leading provider of asset management and maintenance solutions for the Construction Plant and MHE within the MOD. The Amey Defence Equipment 3-year Apprentice Engineer training programme gives you the opportunity to become a fully qualified Forklift Truck & Powered Access Engineer. Amey Defence Equipment Engineers fault find, maintain, service and repair, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems, located within an ever-growing range of Materials Handling and Powered Access Equipment.
What you will do:
- Years 1 to 3 you will complete the 3-year apprenticeship qualification: Level 3 Lift Truck and Powered Access Engineering Technician Apprenticeship standard
- You will gain on-the job experience, starting with shadowing your mentor and other Engineers, progressing to performing tasks under supervision, then alongside qualified Engineers where your work will be checked and signed off
- Work will be carried out on customer premises and at Amey Defence Equipment workshop locations within your specified region
What you will bring:
- 3 GCSEs at grade 4/C or Scottish National 5 Grade C or above in English, Science & Mathematics (or equivalent) - desirable
- A full or Provisional UK driving licence - desirable
- Comfortable working outdoors in inclement weather conditions
- Comfortable completing both manual labour and administrative tasks

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Apply health and safety procedures and safe systems of work in compliance with regulations and standards relevant to lift truck or powered access machines.
- Obtain and interpret lift truck and powered access machine technical data and repair instructions.
- Use tools, workshop equipment, diagnostic and measuring equipment when carrying out maintenance and repairs.
- Perform preventative maintenance activities on lift truck and powered access machines.
- Perform inspections on lift truck and powered access machines in compliance with Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) regulations.
- Remove and replace mechanical, electrical and hydraulic components.
- Apply diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to diagnose faults on lift truck or powered access machine systems.
- Carry out functional testing and quality checks on repaired lift truck or powered access machine components and systems.
- Carry out repairs and make required adjustments.
- Record or enter information - paper based or electronic. For example, job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents and manufacturers' documentation, work sheets, checklists.
- Check and maintain stock.
- Communicate with others verbally for example, colleagues and stakeholders.
- Prepare and maintain a clean, tidy and safe working area.
- Identify, organise and use resources to complete tasks, in compliance with quality, safety, sustainability and environmental standards and guidance.
- Follow equality, diversity and inclusion procedures.
- Store and maintain tools, workshop equipment, diagnostic and measuring equipment for maintenance and repairs.

Training schedule
Training will be delivered through a combination of on-the-job learning and off-the-job training with F-TEC. The apprentice will develop essential knowledge, skills and behaviours in the workplace under supervision, while also building a portfolio of work-based evidence and receiving ongoing coaching and support.
You will attend 5 one-week block sessions per year which will take place at F-TEC’s training centre in Swindon. In between these blocks, you will continue learning in the workplace, supported by regular coaching, progress reviews, and the completion of work-based evidence to meet the requirements of the apprenticeship standard.
