Summary

We are looking for an ambitious professional to join our Commercial team at the ATJ Group, this opportunity will be a mix of both Estimating and Quantity Surveying. We place all our Apprentices on bespoke development plans which are designed during their first 6 months, this maps out their first 2 - 5 years and highlights possible changes in title, salary increases, training opportunities & success indicators.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Assist the Commercial Lead / Estimator / Quantity Surveyor with the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Support with the full tender process from enquiry to submission, including interpreting specifications, pricing works, coordinating supplier/subcontractor input, and preparing professional tender documentation
  • Support with client relationships through proactive communication, attending tender meetings/interviews, and supporting negotiations to secure orders and contracts
  • Support project delivery post-award by handing over to delivery teams, assisting with value engineering, variations, and ongoing commercial or technical queries
  • Participate in tender handover from estimating department
  • Ensure adequate LOI or PO in place
  • Prepare profit plan
  • Procure subcontract packages and orders ensuring compliance with specification, drawings and employers requirements
  • Prepare and submit client applications
  • Visit site regularly and join application meetings with the client
  • Complete site measures where relevant
  • Participate in team meetings and liaise with the site team

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Health and Safety: Apply health and safety issues to all activities.
  • Sustainability: Demonstrate application of the principles of sustainability.
  • Construction Technology: Assist in the implementation of the most appropriate solutions for construction projects
  • Contracts: Be able to apply different types of contracts to different situations.
  • Procurement: Assist in the selection of and negotiation with specialist contractors for a construction project.
  • Cost control: Assist in the measurement and costing of construction works during a project.
  • Financial reporting: Assist in the preparation of financial reports, cash flow and cost forecasts for a construction project.
  • Administration: Assist in the collection, collation and storage of relevant data and its analysis.

Training schedule

  • The Apprentice will be working closely with an experienced team, therefore a great learning opportunity
  • They will be undertaking a Higher Apprenticeship and receive their HNC
  • Formal training will be undertaken remotely with the training provider; University College of Estate Management, this is usually one day per week and can either be done in the office or from home
  • A Level 4 qualification in Construction and Built Environment

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)

Other requirements

The position will involve travelling by both car and public transport, our project locations are not fixed and change over time. You will be required to attend each location assigned to you as necessary. Early starts are common to ensure you can start your day at the designated location as required.

After this apprenticeship

Once this Apprenticeship has been achieved it is likely the Apprentice will progress onto the Level 6 Construction Quantity Surveyor (Degree). From here they are able to progress within their Surveying career from Apprentice to Assistant, Surveyor to Commercial Management.
