Summary

The apprentice will support the Safety Health and Environmental Team with day-to-day advice and guidance to the broader business. The role is essential in ensuring that all Safety Health and Environmental policies and procedures are adhered to and kept up to date across production facilities and construction sites.

Wage

£18,000 a year

You will also be eligible for yearly increases based on academic and workplace performance.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Support the SHE department with the creation, delivery and monitoring of SHE plans which underpin the SHE strategy and supports the achievement of our operational objectives
  • Be a key participant in the SHE Support Team by participating in the development of the management system and participate in projects to improve the level of its effectiveness
  • Build and develop effective, collaborative working relationships with the operational leadership and managements teams in order to positively influence their SHE capabilities
  • Work with the operational leadership and management teams to improve our safety culture, and to develop a motivational and rewarding working environment that will facilitate the achievement of business objectives and company values
  • Champion the use of the SHE management system throughout the company and ensure the quality of information contained is as required
  • Ensure the delivery of the company’s SHE KPIs and report monthly on progress. Where areas of non-conformance or areas for improvement are identified ensure that these are raised and escalated as necessary to gain compliance and improvement
  • Drive the delivery of SHE excellence across the operational areas they are responsible for: Support other Advisors in monitoring SHE compliance levels and fostering the relationship between the operational teams and the SHE team to ensure continuous improvement and regular reviews of contract and external customer’s needs
  • Support and encourage positive employee engagement and communication processes at all levels. Build constructive working relationships with client and union representatives as required
  • Support SHE initiatives and projects outside of assigned areas of responsibility as allocated by the SHE Manager
  • Collaborate with the business development team regarding bid support and mobilisation assistance
  • Support the operational teams in the management of incidents and near misses including incident investigation and the application of SHE guidance in relation to RIDDOR reportable events or other notifiable events with the relevant enforcing authorities

Where you'll work

This apprenticeship role will be based in North London or the surrounding northern areas to ensure suitable access to central London, as well as the ability to travel to Birmingham for a project commencing in the second or third quarter of 2027.

Please note that this is a mobile position. While you will have access to our London office, the role will involve working across a range of projects and sites.

Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Present and hold an audiences attention, for example when delivering SHE training, toolbox talks, inductions or presenting data or investigation findings to the workforce or management team. Show they can sell the SHE message, have personal impact, deal with challenge, reflect on personal performance, use appropriate language for the audience
  • Assist the management team in the development, management, implementation and monitoring of the Safety, Health and Environmental Management System by updating systems in line with changes in legislation or best practice, delivering training, coaching operational teams and undertaking workplace inspections
  • Provide advice on the practical implementation of the companys SHE policies and processes applying generic industry guidance into the context of the workplace
  • Identify the hazards and evaluate: workplace instructions that are relevant to the individual’s job; working practices in the individual’s job that may harm themselves or others’; aspects of the individual’s job that could harm themselves or others; which of the potentially harmful working practices and aspects of the individual’s work present the highest risks to themselves or others; how to deal with hazards in accordance with workplace instructions and legal requirements
  • Support the practical application of the workplace instructions and suppliers or manufacturers instructions for the safe use of equipment, materials and products
  • Support and assist in the implementation of SHE inspections and monitoring systems demonstrating the balance between enforcement and internal support
  • Undertake and/or assist with the monitoring, analysis of and reporting of SHE performance
  • Prepare and maintain records relating to safety, health and environmental matters that comply with legal and workplace requirements and are accessible to those who are authorised to use them. E.g. records associated with Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, Lifting Operation and Lifting Equipment Regulations, Noise at Work Regulations, Hand Arm Vibration Regulations or Environmental Permitting Regulations
  • Assist the management team in establishing, managing and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders such as local authorities, Health and Safety Executive, Environment Agency, Occupational Health, Occupational Hygienists and others as required and directed
  • Research Safety, Health and Environmental Issues and best practices. Review updates of health and safety regulations e.g. changes to Construction, Design and Management Regulations or updates to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health along with workplace instructions, making sure that information is from reliable sources
  • Assist and/or manage the investigation of accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses and other incidents as directed
  • Recognise where decisions have a financial cost and assisting to develop a budget
  • Recognise situations where the activity will benefit from contributions and expertise of other internal departments such as HR, Finance, IT or Occupational Health

Training schedule

Alongside your duties, you will also be completing a Level 3 Safety, Health and Environmental Technician apprenticeship standard with Penshaw View. All training sessions will be delivered remotely.

Other requirements

Willing to travel across facilities and sites. There is a need for travel to other locations within the UK and nights away to cover the operational activities as appropriate. As such the successful candidate will need to have a UK driving licence.
