Summary

Those that are selected to complete this apprenticeship will play a key role in encouraging and building the low carbon engineering industry with a particular and immediate focus on heat pump technology.

£21,944.68 a year

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Apprentices will be placed with one of our installer partners 3 days a week to gain valuable work experience, 1 day a week will be at Derby College and 1 day each week will be attending manager catch-up's at Vaillant, additional training or self-study.

Apprentices will learn how to plan, install, service, commission and maintain all aspects of a low-carbon heating system.

Customer service skills will be very important in the success of each stage, as well as being organised, tidy and respectful. All of this will be further developed and supported by time working with and for Vaillant Group – whether that be in our Service Centre, Training department, Product teams, or Industrial areas.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Operate in a safe working manner by complying with health and safety legislation, approved codes of practice and guidance and applying safe working practices.
  • Apply environmental and sustainability principles.
  • Produce work programmes for tasks within low carbon heating and hot water industry.
  • Produce risk assessments and method statements for the low carbon heating and hot water systems work.
  • Install, low carbon heating and hot water systems.
  • Test, commission and handover low carbon heating and hot water systems, including providing operational advice.
  • Install electrical and electronic control systems applicable to low carbon heating and hot water systems.
  • Test and commission electrical and electronic control systems applicable to low carbon heating and hot water systems.
  • Service, maintain, diagnose faults and rectify low carbon heating and hot water systems, including safe isolation of supply.
  • Perform routine service, maintenance, fault diagnosis and rectification procedures and techniques on electrical and electrical control systems applicable to low carbon heating and hot water systems including carrying out safe isolation procedures.
  • Decommission heating and hot water systems.
  • Decommission electrical and electrical control systems applicable to heating and hot water systems.
  • Plan, size and select low carbon heating and hot water systems.
  • Communicate with others verbally and in writing.
  • Works collaboratively with clients or stakeholders to solve problems.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade C/4 or above or equivalent)
  • Maths (grade 4/C or above or equivalent)
  • Science (grade 4/C or above or equivalent)

Other in:

Plumbing & Heating (grade Pass)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

This apprenticeship is of a physical nature, which involves manual handling of heavy equipment, working at heights and in confined spaces. Both uniform and tools will be provided to successful candidates, as well as the costs for any regulatory qualifications deemed necessary to be a successful low carbon heating engineer.
