Summary
Fairhurst has an exciting career opportunity. The Apprentice Technician will support the Civils Design Team in delivering highway and drainage projects, including drafting, surveying, site inspections and meetings. You will be mentored by experienced staff throughout your apprenticeship.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Provide technical support in the preparation of drawings, specifications, and reports for new highway schemes and improvements to existing infrastructure, including works under Section 278 and Section 38 Agreements.
- Assist in the collection, collation, and review of existing utility records and statutory undertakers’ information.
- Assistance in undertaking levels design in accordance with current design standards, utilising relevant design manuals, local authority requirements, and software such as Civil 3D.
- Assistance in the preparation of highways, external works, levels, and drainage drawings to support planning application submissions, primarily for highway and drainage projects.
- Undertake design tasks using AutoCAD, AutoTrack, and drainage design software such as Causeway Flow.
- Assistance in the liaison with clients, highway authorities, utility providers, and other stakeholders to support the detailed design process and secure necessary approvals.
- Assist senior staff as required, including attending meetings and preparing meeting notes with clients, local authorities and consultants from various disciplines.

- Apply appropriate civil engineering principles, techniques, and methods, including mathematical, scientific, and technical know-how, to civil engineering and the construction process
- Apply key principles, techniques and methods of data and technical information collection, analysis, and evaluation to support the delivery of civil engineering models, designs, and technical solutions
- Operate appropriate software packages for data gathering and analysis, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) or Building Information Modelling (BIM), to create technical drawings, models and designs using relevant conventions and engineering terminology
- Apply statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures, and regulations in the civil engineering environment, using risk management processes, procedures, and documentation
- Support and contribute to the production or modification of civil engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and procedures and codes of practice
- Apply environmental policies and sustainable principles in civil engineering projects, recognising the need to reduce carbon use, lower emissions and plan for wider sustainability
- Plan, carry out and manage own work in line with quality assurance, recognising the wider implications to customer needs, and within cost and resource limitations
- Consider equality, diversity and inclusion in the delivery of civil engineering projects
- Apply document control processes and procedures using the approved processes, maintaining quality compliance when creating or amending engineering documentation
- Communicate using appropriate methods for the audience, and incorporate relevant and appropriate terms, standards, and data
- Apply ethical principles to civil engineering projects, including the secure use of data and information
- Plan, undertake and review their own professional competence, regularly updating and reviewing their CPD to improve performance

- 2 ½ Year Apprenticeship Programme.
- Civil Engineering, Knowledge, skills & Behaviours - delivered in the workplace.
- Level 3 BTEC in Civil Engineering - Day Release or Remote Delivery.
- Specialist Training Programme Blocks of your choice.
- End Point Assessment - Knowledge Test, Practical Test and Presentation/Interview.
- Specialist Training in industry software.
Requirements
Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- English (grade 4+)
- Mathematics (grade 4+)

This is a pathway of progression to becoming a Professionally Qualified Chartered Engineer.

After this apprenticeship
Once you have completed your apprenticeship, you will have the chance to work as a qualified civil engineering technician, which in turn can lead on to Project/Principal Technician role. Chartership (EngTech, MICE) through the Institution of Civil Engineering will also be encouraged.
