We are a well-established company in Loughborough, covering residential and commercial properties for all aspects of tree care, be that general pruning of shrubs and bushes, to working on trees within conservation areas. The successful applicant will learn all aspects of working within a professional environment, working to professional standards.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • The apprentice will learn all aspects of working within a professional environment, working to professional standards
  • In particular this position is for a professional climber to learn how to safely and competently fell, reduce, dismantle, prune and pollard trees to a bs3998 2010 standard
  • The apprentice will work as part of a team of arborists, working within the residential and commercial sectors of the industry
  • The apprentice will develop knowledge of the practical skills involved, customer service, health and safety on site, and knowledge of tree species and their correct management
  • The apprentice will be trained alongside experienced and fully qualified climbing arborists, whilst learning a professional approach to the trade

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Recognise health and safety needs onsite and work safely
  • Complete site-specific risk assessments and emergency action plans
  • Select appropriate equipment for tree work operations
  • Set out workplace signage (highway & non highway) and assists with traffic control
  • Process tree work arisings using appropriate machinery
  • Maintain and take appropriate care of tools, equipment and other onsite factors (such as customer or public buildings etc.)
  • Recognise a variety of tree species using common names
  • Carry out a range of formative pruning operations
  • Carry out branch removal up to 200mm diameter with hand tools (target pruning for final cut).
  • Fell and process small trees up to 380mm diameter.
  • Support aerial tree workers with transfer of equipment for aerial tree work operations
  • Perform an aerial rescue of colleague from a rope and harness
  • Work safely at height in the tree under supervision
  • Communicate technical information about arboricultural operations to fellow team members, clients and other stakeholders as required.

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 2/E or above or equivalent)
  • Maths (grade 2/E or above or equivalent)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

Hard work in all types of weather. Please be expected to work come rain, wind, snow. You will learn to work at height with dangerous machinery. This role is physically demanding, and strong work ethic, teamwork and an ability to communicate with other team members and clients is needed. The successful applicant would be expected to get to the work yard at Lisle Street in Loughborough for 0730, they would also be expected to arrange their own travel to/from DCG. Punctuality and reliability are a must. Applicants will interview onsite, please turn up prepared to work.
