Summary

Teaching Assistants work as part of a team to promote progress in all areas, including independence, acceptable behaviour, social skills and self-advocacy, with all pupils with whom they have contact, irrespective of the nature and complexity of the pupils’ learning difficulties or disabilities.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Support pupils with a range of additional needs including physical disabilities, learning difficulties, communication needs and complex medical needs.
  • Work closely with teachers and other support staff to help pupils access learning and develop independence in a safe and nurturing environment.
  • Assisting with setting up, carrying out and assessing planned activities set by the teacher for different groups of children.       
  • Full training will be given.

  • Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

Training schedule

East Sussex College will provide the apprenticeship framework which will include Knowledge, Skills, Behaviour, Diploma (if included), Functional Skills.  

Weekly/block college attendance for Trade, Engineering and Hairdressing apprenticeships. 

East Sussex College will ensure Health & Safety, and Equality & Diversity.

Requirements

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

Maths and English (grade C/4 or above (or equivalent))

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

  • Hands on Learning – working closely with children and young people.
  • You may be required to support pupils with personal care such as feeding, toileting or mobility assistance. Full training will be provided.
  • The role can be physically active, including helping pupils move safely around the classroom or school environment.
  • You will need to be patient, calm and resilient as some pupils may display challenging behaviour or require additional emotional support.
  • As this is an apprenticeship, you will need to balance your work responsibilities with study and coursework as part of your training programme.
