Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
You will have the opportunity to gain new skills and knowledge whilst carrying out maintenance and repairs on heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes in your workplace, this will include mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical vehicle systems.
You will be immersed in the fast paced and thriving world of the automotive industry. The tasks you will face will be ever changing, with new technologies and diagnostic techniques constantly being introduced.
Some of the tasks you will be working on include:
- Completion of signed service and inspection records
- Completion of defect reports and associated paperwork to comply with legal requirements
- Prepare vehicles and trailers for annual MOT testing (to a standard to ensure 1st time pass)
- Perform ad-hoc vehicle repairs, investigating and rectifying vehicle defects
- Ensuring the correct and effective safe use of all tools, plant and ancillary equipment
- Maintaining good housekeeping standards carrying out any other duty deemed reasonable by Management

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
- The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
- Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
- Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
- The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
- Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
- Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
- Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
- Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
- Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
- To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.
Training schedule
S&B Automotive Academy is a specialist automotive apprenticeship training provider based in Bedminster, Bristol. Apprentices will gain practical experience working within a FedEx technical workshop, developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician standard.
Throughout the apprenticeship, apprentices attend seven one-week training blocks each year at S&B Automotive Academy.
Each apprentice is supported by a workplace mentor and an S&B Development Coach, who monitor progress using an electronic logbook accessible to both the apprentice and employer.
Apprentices complete a Gateway Assessment at the end of each year before progressing to the final End-Point Assessment.
For apprentices travelling nationally, S&B Automotive Academy is ideally located, a short walk from Bristol Temple Meads railway station and just off the M32. Hotel accommodation is arranged close to the academy, with apprentices staying in a standard double room for single occupancy. Travel, accommodation, breakfast and a two-course evening meal are covered by the employer while attending training blocks.
