Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Installing cabling (1st fix) to relevant standards
  • Drilling holes/using a cordless drill and a range of hand tools
  • Mounting and connecting equipment (2nd fix)
  • Commissioning, testing, fault finding
  • Reactive & preventative maintenance
  • Liaising with site personnel
  • Updating site paperwork - work sheets & handover documentation
  • Following health & safety guidelines
  • Applicants should have good IT skills and the ability to work as part of a team
  • Driving licence and access to own transport is required for this role
  • Probationary period applies

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Comply with safety legislation, codes of practice, risk assessments, method statements, safe systems of work and apply control measures.
  • Complete functionality tests of systems and components during commissioning systems.
  • Apply and implement system design, planning and installations including additional components to existing systems.
  • Carry out takeover procedure, diagnose and repair faults.
  • Operate ICT equipment and systems to store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive digital data and electronic information.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability, regulations and standards.
  • Complete functionality tests of systems and components during handover of systems.
  • Carries out risk assessments.
  • Communicate with others verbally for example, internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers using sector specific terminology.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, as part of a team. Consult and engage with occupants or others who are or could be affected by work (for example vulnerable, older, and disabled people) and respond appropriately.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders using sector specific terminology through written means.
  • Plan and install systems cabling.

  • Carry out maintenance activities on intrusion alarm, access control, video surveillance (CCTV) and their components.

Training schedule

You will attend Access Training (Team Valley, Gateshead) for day release - and be enrolled on the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems level 3 apprenticeship standard.

Day release may be 1-day per week or 1-day per fortnight dependent upon the phase of the course you are on.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

Please note applicants should hold a full driving licence and have their own transport (due to travel to different work locations on various sites) travel expenses will be reimbursed when travel is further than your usual commute.

Please note this role may involve working at height or occasionally in small spaces.

Due to the nature of the work, some flexibility with working hours may be required from time to time.
