Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Fabrication Work - Assist in the fabrication of steel products, including cutting, shaping, welding, and assembling components according to technical drawings and specifications
  • Equipment Operation - Learn to operate and maintain various fabrication equipment such as saws, drills, welders, and CNC machines, ensuring safe and efficient use
  • Quality Control - Participate in quality control processes to ensure all products meet industry standards and client specifications, including inspecting and testing fabricated items
  • Safety Practices - Follow health and safety guidelines to maintain a safe working environment, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to safe work practices
  • Team Collaboration - Work closely with experienced fabricators, engineers, and other team members to complete projects on time and to high standards
  • Documentation - Assist in maintaining accurate records of fabrication processes, including work orders, material usage, and project progress
  • Learning and Development - Engage in continuous learning and professional development, including attending training sessions, workshops, and gaining relevant certifications

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Work safely at all times, comply with health & safety legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Comply with environmental legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Obtain, check and use the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation).
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity.
  • Undertake the work activity using the correct processes, procedures and equipment.
  • Carry out the required checks (such as quality, compliance or testing) using the correct procedures, processes and/or equipment.
  • Deal promptly and effectively with problems within the limits of their responsibility using approved diagnostic methods and techniques and report those which cannot be resolved to the appropriate personnel.
  • Complete any required documentation using the defined recording systems at the appropriate stages of the work activity.
  • Restore the work area on completion of the activity and where applicable return any resources and consumables to the appropriate location.
  • Identify and follow correct Metal work instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
  • Mark out using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Cut and form Metal for the production or maintenance of fabricated products.
  • Produce and assemble Metal products to required specification and quality requirements.
  • Identify and follow correct joining instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
  • Carry out the relevant preparation before starting the joining fabrication activity.
  • Set up, check, adjust and use joining and related equipment.
  • Weld joints in accordance with approved welding procedures and quality requirements.

In company induction on starting and ongoing health & safety training relevant to the role and equipment used within role. 

Level 3 Metal Fabrication apprenticeship standard Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge) 
Level: 3 
OR 
Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge) 

Training will be delivered one day per week, term time, and is based at The Ruddington site and facilities are in creation to enrich the student experience, developing them with the necessary skills using industry recognised equipment to ensure the apprentice receives training closely matched to the employer’s and industry.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

Maths and English (grade 4-9)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £8.00 per hour. This applies to 16-18year old apprentices and those aged over 18 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training. * Please note that anyone under the age of 18 will only work a maximum of 40 hours per week. Any role which exceeds these hours on advert will be amended accordingly to fall in line with the legislation * Please note that if the successful applicant is found prior to the closing date the vacancy maybe withdrawn early
