Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
As an apprentice, your role will be varied, bridging the gap between clinical support and customer service.
Your daily responsibilities will include:
- Customer Greeting: Welcoming patients to the practice and managing the appointment diary
- Pre-screening: Learning to use specialist equipment to perform initial tests (such as auto-refraction and pressure tests) before the patient sees the Optometrist
- Frame Styling: Assisting patients in selecting frames that suit their style, face shape, and prescription requirements
- Technical Measurements: Taking precise measurements for lens positioning and explaining different lens types (e.g., anti-glare coatings or varifocals)
- Admin & Maintenance: Processing NHS forms, ordering stock, and ensuring the retail display areas are clean and professional
- Repairs: Learning how to perform minor spectacle repairs and adjustments for patients

- Demonstrate patience and calmness.
- Show you understand the customer’s point of view.
